How much do contract accountants jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for contract accountants in the United States is $67,919.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $55,000.00 and $75,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are contract accountants?

Contract accountants are financial professionals who provide accounting services to organizations or individuals on a temporary or project basis, rather than as full-time employees. They may handle tasks such as preparing financial statements, managing budgets, conducting audits, or ensuring compliance with tax regulations. Businesses often hire contract accountants during busy periods, for special projects, or to fill temporary staffing gaps. This flexible arrangement allows companies to access specialized expertise without committing to long-term employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and tax regulations, usually supported by a degree in accounting or finance and, in some cases, CPA certification. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Xero, as well as proficiency in Excel, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help Contract Accountants manage multiple clients and deadlines efficiently. These skills ensure accurate financial management, compliance with regulations, and the ability to build trust with clients in a dynamic work environment.

What are some common challenges contract accountants face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract accountants often juggle the financial needs of several clients at once, which can present challenges such as managing conflicting deadlines, adapting to different accounting systems, and maintaining clear communication across various teams. Staying organized and prioritizing tasks are crucial to avoid errors and ensure timely delivery of reports. Additionally, contract accountants must quickly learn each client's industry-specific requirements and compliance standards to provide accurate and effective support.

What is the difference between Contract Accountants vs Bookkeepers?

AspectContract AccountantsBookkeepers

Work EnvironmentConsulting, freelance, or temporary roles for businessesIn-house or small business settings handling daily transactions
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by firms needing specialized financial advice or project-based workCommon in small businesses managing day-to-day financial records

Contract Accountants typically have advanced accounting credentials and work on a temporary or project basis, providing strategic financial services. Bookkeepers focus on recording daily financial transactions and often have basic certifications. While Contract Accountants handle complex financial tasks, Bookkeepers manage routine record-keeping, making each role suited to different business needs.

Contract Accountants Revenue/JIB/External Reporting/General Ledger

Augmentis

Dallas, TX

$53K - $73K/yr

Contractor

Posted 27 days ago

Job description

We are seeking experienced contract accountants to support our clients' accounting and reporting needs on a project and interim basis, in full-time W-2 roles through our firm, with assignments typically ranging from 3 to 12 months in duration.

As a contract accountant in our network, you will take on meaningful assignments that leverage your expertise, provide variety, and allow you to step into critical roles without the long-term commitment of a permanent position.

These roles are ideal if you enjoy solving problems quickly, owning deliverables, and seeing the impact of your work in real time.

About the Opportunity

Our clients engage contract accountants to cover parental leaves, support system implementations, stabilize teams after turnover, or add bandwidth during peak close and reporting cycles. As part of our talent pool, you'll be considered for:

  • Revenue accounting roles focused on oil and gas properties and production.
  • JIB assignments handling joint interest billing and owner relationships.
  • External/SEC reporting projects supporting public-company filing requirements.
  • General ledger and corporate accounting roles that anchor the monthly close.

Assignments are full-time and typically range from 3 to 12 months, from short, focused projects to longer interim roles. Many consultants choose to work on back-to-back engagements with us for ongoing income and flexibility.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead or support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Maintain accurate general ledger records and ensure proper coding, classification, and documentation for all transactions.
  • Prepare supporting schedules for internal management reports and external auditors.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in account balances, collaborating with operations, finance, and other departments.
  • Document processes and controls, help standardize workflows, and support knowledge transfer to client teams.

Revenue Accountant Focus

  • Record and reconcile oil, gas, NGL, and other production revenue for operated and non-operated properties.
  • Prepare monthly revenue allocations, accruals, and distributions, including royalty owner and working interest owner payments.
  • Reconcile revenue, suspense, receivable, and payable accounts and address volume, price, and ownership variances.
  • Coordinate with land, marketing, and production teams to resolve ownership changes, title issues, and pricing discrepancies.
  • Assist with severance, royalty, and related tax filings and support compliance requirements.

JIB Accountant Focus

  • Prepare and review joint interest billings and partner statements in line with joint operating agreements and COPAS guidelines.
  • Allocate operating and capital costs to working interest owners, ensuring accuracy of decks, cost centers, and AFEs.
  • Maintain JIB sub-ledgers, clear suspense items, and reconcile JIB-related balance sheet accounts.
  • Respond to non-operator and partner inquiries, research disputes, and prepare corrections or adjusting entries.
  • Support improvements around owner setup, billing cycles, coding, and reporting.

External/SEC Reporting Focus

  • Assist in preparing quarterly and annual financial statements and related footnote disclosures.
  • Support drafting and review of 10-Q, 10-K, 8-K, and other external reporting documents.
  • Perform tie-outs, data validation, and consistency checks between trial balances, consolidation systems, and final filings.
  • Support technical accounting research, memos, and implementation of new or complex standards.
  • Coordinate with external auditors on PBC requests and supporting documentation.

General & Corporate Accounting Focus

  • Manage day-to-day accounting activities such as AP, AR, fixed assets, and payroll entries (depending on client).
  • Handle multiple entities, consolidations, intercompany eliminations, and foreign currency transactions where applicable.
  • Prepare internal management reports and analysis to help leadership understand performance and trends.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes, including templates and actuals vs. plan analysis.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or similar credentials are a plus.
  • 3+ years of hands-on accounting experience in revenue, JIB, external/SEC reporting, or corporate/GL roles.
  • Experience in energy/oil & gas or other complex, asset-intensive industries is highly valued.
  • Proficiency with common accounting/ERP systems and strong Excel skills.
  • Ability to ramp up quickly, work independently, and communicate clearly with cross-functional teams.
  • Interest in contract work, with comfort navigating changing environments and priorities.

Contract Structure

  • All engagements are full-time (40 hours/week) during core business hours.
  • All roles are W-2 through our firm, with competitive hourly rates based on experience, assignment complexity, and location.
  • Opportunities include onsite, hybrid, and fully remote arrangements, depending on client needs.
  • Strong performance can lead to extensions, repeat engagements, or conversion to permanent roles, if desired.

How to Apply

Submit your resume highlighting experience in revenue accounting, JIB, external/SEC reporting, and/or general ledger roles. Please note:

  • Preferred assignment length (3–6 months, 6–12 months, or flexible).
  • Preference for remote, hybrid, or onsite work.
  • Key systems you've used and your strongest focus areas (Revenue, JIB, External Reporting, General).
