What is a contents technician?

Contents Technicians are professionals who specialize in the cleaning, restoration, and inventory of personal belongings and property contents after events like fires, floods, or other disasters. They carefully assess damaged items, determine what can be salvaged, and use specialized equipment and techniques to restore them to their pre-loss condition. Their work often involves packing, transporting, and storing items, as well as detailed documentation to support insurance claims. Contents Technicians play a crucial role in helping individuals and businesses recover their valuable possessions after a loss.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a contents technician?

To thrive as a Contents Technician, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and experience in inventory management, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with restoration industry software (such as Xactimate), digital inventory tools, and basic photography equipment is typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help you manage client expectations and work efficiently on-site.
