What is consumer product research?

Consumer product research is the process of studying consumer preferences, behaviors, and feedback to help companies design, improve, or market their products. It involves methods like surveys, focus groups, and product testing to gather data on how people interact with or perceive a product. The insights gained help businesses make informed decisions about product development, pricing, packaging, and advertising. By understanding consumer needs and trends, companies aim to create products that better meet market demands and stand out from competitors.

What are some common challenges faced in a consumer product research role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Consumer Product Research often encounter challenges such as interpreting ambiguous consumer feedback, balancing qualitative insights with quantitative data, and keeping up with rapidly changing market trends. To address these, it's important to use a mix of research methodologies, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams like marketing and product development, and continuously update research tools and knowledge. Regular communication and sharing findings with stakeholders can also ensure research insights are actionable and aligned with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a consumer product researcher?

To thrive as a Consumer Product Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, a background in market research or related fields, and familiarity with statistical analysis. Proficiency in tools like SPSS, Excel, survey platforms, and sometimes experience with qualitative research software or certifications in market research are common requirements. Excellent communication, creativity, and curiosity help you distill insights and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for generating actionable consumer insights that drive product development and business success.

The position will conduct and manage Commerce research on the Product Research and Consumer Insights team and will be a lead for Commerce Product and Design teams - answering questions like: how do ideal new subscriber experiences differ across devices, how might subscribers want to manage their accounts, and how to best ensure the easy and flexible experiences needed for the future of streaming subscription management.

Reporting directly to the Vice President of User Research and Consumer Insights , they will collaborate with cross functional partners across Product, Design, Analytics, and Product Marketing, and will lead research validating and evaluating product decisions, as well as the work that gives shape to new commerce and growth initiatives.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Consulting cross functional partners on their research questions and selecting the right methods and tools to answer them

  • Conducting research across the product lifecycle via unmoderated prototype test, lab studies, online interviews, observational tests, surveys, benchmark studies, diary studies, and more

  • Crafting memos and reports that deliver clear insights, surface timely signals, clearly communicate key learnings, and drive actionable recommendations

  • Owning and evolving the design research enablement program, including training, tools management, and ongoing research process consulting to help non-researchers gather the data they need to confidently make decisions

  • Working closely with other insights teams, analytics, and strategy partners to deliver a holistic view of product performance, subscriber needs, and opportunities

  • Leveraging innovative research methodologies and AI-enabled tools to streamline and scale repeatable workflows

  • Managing relationships with external research agencies and vendors, ensuring high-quality deliverables and optimal resource allocation

  • Championing a consumer-centric mindset throughout the organization

  • Staying abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in consumer product research or consumer insights for ecommerce or subscription products, or a related industry

  • Expertise in designing, executing, and analyzing a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies (e.g., in-depth interviews, prototype tests, card sorts, diary studies, focus groups, surveys, correlation analyses, etc.)

  • Experience adapting research methodologies for benchmarking or iterative testing

  • Deep understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different research methods and when and how to apply them

  • Experience enabling and advising others in research best practices

  • Demonstrated success using data and insights to influence business decisions and impact product direction

  • Skilled at digging into data to identify insights beyond what's visible on the surface and connecting findings back to underlying questions

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to combine insights across consumer research with behavioral data insights

Desirable Characteristics:

  • A genuine passion for entertainment and media, and a deep curiosity about culture and trends as they relate to products and user experiences

  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative analysis, as well as basic data visualization

  • Experience thriving in a highly dynamic, matrixed organization

  • Strong communication skills with proven ability to synthesize crucial insights and influence key stakeholders

  • Comfortable working independently and driving initiatives, while collaborating closely with partners

  • Balancing ownership of multiple projects simultaneously, and leading broader initiatives

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise strong judgment in ambiguous situations

  • Exceptional presentation and storytelling skills

  • Familiarity with emerging technologies and AI-enabled tools, with the ability to apply them pragmatically to streamline and improve research approaches, workflows, and visualizations
