Job description

Job Title: Construction Inspector / Construction Oversight Representative
Job Description

We are seeking a Construction Inspector / Construction Oversight Representative to support field activities on large infrastructure construction projects across New York State. In this role, you monitor contractor work, observe construction progress, and help ensure that all work is performed safely and in accordance with project expectations, drawings, and specifications. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with general construction inspection or contractor oversight experience on commercial, civil, infrastructure, or utility-related projects, and offers exposure to complex, high-visibility energy, utility, and transmission systems.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor contractor work on active construction sites to verify compliance with project expectations, drawings, specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Observe daily construction progress and document activities through inspection reports, daily logs, and other field documentation tools.
  • Support construction oversight efforts by providing field presence and feedback on contractor operations, workflows, and work quality.
  • Read and interpret basic construction drawings and project specifications to understand scope, details, and required standards.
  • Assist in verifying that construction activities align with pipeline codes, project specifications, and relevant utility or infrastructure requirements where applicable.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors and project stakeholders to address questions, clarify requirements, and report field observations.
  • Maintain organized records of inspections, observations, and documentation to support quality assurance and quality control processes.
  • Participate in contractor oversight or owner’s representative activities, helping to ensure adherence to safety and regulatory requirements on regulated or safety-sensitive projects.
  • Use basic technology, including the Microsoft Office suite and field documentation tools, to prepare reports, track progress, and share information with the project team.
  • Work safely and proactively on active construction sites, following site protocols and promoting a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Adapt to different project types, contractors, and site conditions, providing consistent inspection and oversight across a variety of infrastructure, utility, civil, or energy-related projects.
  • Travel to project sites across New York State as needed to provide on-site inspection and oversight support.
  • Support field engineers, QA/QC teams, and other project personnel with timely, accurate information about site conditions and contractor performance.
Essential Skills
  • 1–5+ years of experience in construction inspection, construction oversight, or field support roles such as Construction Inspector, Field Engineer, Inspector Aide, Owner’s Representative, QA/QC, Assistant Superintendent, or similar positions.
  • General understanding of construction workflows, contractor operations, and typical field activities on commercial, civil, infrastructure, or utility projects.
  • Ability to read and understand basic construction drawings and specifications, with willingness to receive training to strengthen these skills.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with contractors and project stakeholders on active construction sites.
  • Strong documentation and organization skills for preparing inspection reports, daily logs, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Comfort working on active construction sites and engaging directly with contractors in the field.
  • Ability to use basic technology and software, including the Microsoft Office suite, for documentation and reporting.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience on infrastructure, utility, civil, or energy-related construction projects.
  • Exposure to pipeline, electric, gas, telecom, water, or other utility work.
  • Experience in contractor oversight or owner’s representative roles on construction projects.
  • Previous work on regulated or safety-sensitive projects where compliance and documentation are critical.
  • Familiarity with inspection reporting systems, daily logs, or other field documentation tools.
  • Experience with pipeline inspection and understanding of pipeline codes and project specifications.
  • Interest in working on large, visible infrastructure projects that support energy, utilities, and transmission systems.
  • Motivation to build a strong resume quickly through exposure to diverse projects, contractors, and site conditions.
  • Interest in opportunities that may lead to conversion to a permanent role for strong performers.
Work Environment

This is a field-based role on active construction sites across New York State, supporting large, visible infrastructure projects in energy, utilities, and transmission systems. You work primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and must be comfortable navigating active work zones, equipment, and changing site environments. The position offers exposure to a wide range of project types, contractors, and site conditions, providing faster skill development than working on a single static site. Overtime or extended hours may be required during peak construction activity to meet project needs. You will regularly use basic technology such as the Microsoft Office suite and field documentation tools, and you are expected to follow all site safety protocols and standards while maintaining a professional appearance appropriate for construction environments.
