Construction Safety Manager The Construction Safety Manager will lead onsite safety efforts for large-scale civil construction work, partnering closely with the existing lead safety professional. This role oversees a team of safety specialists and supports approximately 160 onsite personnel, ensuring that excavation, storm water, piping, and earthwork activities comply with all applicable safety regulations and best practices. Responsibilities Lead and manage onsite safety specialists, providing direction, coaching, and support to a team of 35 safety team members. Partner with the current lead safety professional to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs for civil construction activities, including excavation, storm water, piping, and earthwork. Oversee safety compliance for approximately 160 onsite workers, ensuring adherence to OSHA standards and company safety policies. Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments for excavation and confined space operations, identifying hazards and recommending corrective actions. Coordinate and obtain necessary safety permits, including permits to CM1, and ensure all required documentation is accurate and up to date. Monitor daily site activities to verify proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices across all civil construction operations. Investigate safety incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, documenting findings and implementing preventive measures. Deliver safety training and toolbox talks related to OSHA 30 topics, excavation safety, confined space entry, and other relevant areas. Collaborate with project leadership and field supervisors to integrate safety requirements into planning, scheduling, and execution of work. Maintain clear, timely communication with all levels of site personnel regarding safety expectations, changes in procedures, and regulatory updates. Support continuous improvement of the safety culture by promoting proactive hazard reporting and reinforcing safe behaviors. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience managing onsite safety specialists in a construction or civil works environment. Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and standards, supported by completion of OSHA 30-hour training. Hands-on experience with safety oversight for excavation operations, including hazard identification and control measures. Practical experience managing safety in confined space environments, including permit processes and entry procedures. Ability to coordinate and secure required safety permits, including permits to CM1, and manage related documentation. Proven capability to oversee safety for large teams, supporting approximately 160 onsite workers across multiple activities. Effective leadership skills with the ability to supervise, mentor, and develop a team of 35 safety professionals. Solid communication skills to interact with field staff, supervisors, and project leadership on safety matters. Additional Skills & Qualifications Professional safety credentials such as Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) are highly preferred. Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification is highly desirable. Experience working on large civil construction projects involving storm water systems, piping, and earthwork is a plus. Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs and toolbox talks is beneficial. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple safety initiatives and documentation requirements simultaneously. Work Environment This role is fully onsite at a major construction project in Clay, NY, focused on civil work such as excavation, storm water management, piping, and earthwork. The Construction Safety Manager works in an active field environment, regularly accessing outdoor areas, construction zones, and potentially confined spaces. Shifts rotate between first and second shift as part of a structured schedule, requiring flexibility to support safety coverage across varying hours.
