ASSISTANT CONFLICT DEFENDER ATTORNEY

Who We Are: The Monroe County Conflict Defenderโ€™s Office is a legal services provider that handles criminal and family court cases for community members who are unable to afford an attorney.

What We Do: Highly skilled staff attorneys at the Conflict Defender provide client-centered legal representation to thousands of clients each year in Rochester City Court, Monroe County Family Court, and the state appellate courts.

Why We Do It: Our office was created in 2003 to represent clients that posed a conflict of interest for the Public Defenderโ€™s Office. Although the process of assigning cases has evolved over the years, the name Conflict Defender has remained.

Our Mission Statement: The Conflict Defenderโ€™s Office is committed to providing exceptional legal representation and compassionate support to members of our community involved in the criminal and family court systems. We believe that everyone deserves zealous legal advocacy regardless of whether they can afford counsel. We know that each and every client is a person deserving of dignity and respect. We realize that we cannot properly address inequities in our justice system, particularly for lowโ€‘income people and members of communities of color, without first attending to the individual needs of the client.

Salary: $75,867 - $105,018 annually

Job Summary: These are positions located in the Department of Public Safety, Conflict Defenderโ€™s Office. These positions represent clients on misdemeanor level offenses and/or represent indigent persons where an individual is entitled to the appointment of counsel including Article 10 (abuse/neglect matters), custody/visitation matters, willful violations of a child support order and domestic violence matters in Rochester City Court.

Characteristics of an Ideal Candidate:

  • 1. The Assistant Conflict Defender shall be an attorney duly licensed to practice law in the State of New York.
  • 2. The Assistant Conflict Defender must have the ability to build relationships with clients and possess clear and effective communication skills.
  • 3. The Assistant Conflict Defender must show a commitment to clients and exceptional advocacy.
  • 4. The Assistant Conflict Defender must have an ability to work with judges, lawyers, court administrators, other persons within the court system, and court officials.
  • 5. The Assistant Conflict Defender should have experience working with lowโ€‘income individuals or communities of color and a commitment to racial equity, diversity and inclusion.

Benefits: Visit: https://www.monroecounty.gov/hr-choosemonroe for more information on our countyโ€™s generous paid time off, 14 holidays and more

Special Requirements: This position is subject to a background check for criminal convictions. Convictions will be considered but will not automatically disqualify the candidate. No criminal background check will occur until after a conditional offer of employment has been made, unless required prior to a conditional offer because of the nature of the position or otherwise required by law.

Candidates for employment with Monroe County Government will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test. Failure to meet the standards may result in disqualification.

If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
