Job description

Position Title: Senior Engineering Systems Analyst

Department: Transmission / Operational Technology

Reports to: Energy Management System (EMS) Supervisor

Location: Atlanta, GA (*On-site)


* During the first three (3) months of employment the incumbent will be required to work five (5) days a week onsite in the office, however thereafter they will be given the opportunity to work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval


Summary

Under direct supervision, oversees and performs activities related to the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of all hardware and software systems within Operational Technology. These systems include the SCADA/Energy Management System (EMS), Oracle Database, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), and SEL TEAM systems. Provides technical assistance/consulting to other departments within MEAG and to all of MEAG's forty-nine (49) Participants.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Ensures the availability of the EMS/SCADA System including related networks and interconnected computer systems by monitoring the equipment and responding to problems reported by Participants and MEAG Power personnel.
  • Build and maintain electric utility SCADA/EMS displays and commission existing and/or new SCADA points (control, status, and analog) with substation field engineers using legacy technologies as well as new Smart Grid IED technologies. New IED technologies include commissioning substation points on SEL 387, SEL 587, SEL 751, SEL 351S relays, SEL3530 and SEL 3350 RTACs, SEL 2431 regulator panels, SEL 2440 TACs, other SEL devices, Cooper regulator panels, and various Smart Grid meters such as the Square D/Schneider ION 8600 meter.
  • Administers all SCADA/EMS databases and associated software. Ensures that the configuration for all EMS systems is accurate and current. Creates/Schedules specialized reports using system tools to assists stakeholders in data extraction from EMS systems.
  • Gathers user requirements and support users of MEAG OT systems including EMS, Data Historian, SEL Team Software, SEL Blueframe, MV-90, and software/systems that help optimize O&M substation equipment efficiency across multiple equipment platforms. Works as a team member in developing and supporting applications that forecast power system usage, record historical trends, and aid in decision support.
  • Experience working with a PostgreSQL database to extract, transform, and manipulate large-scale time-series data from industrial data historians. Demonstrated ability to design efficient queries, optimize performance, and integrate historian data into analytical workflows to support reporting, troubleshooting, and operational insights is highly valued.
  • Manages and maintains virtualized server environments, including provisioning, configuration, and performance tuning of virtual machines. Proficiency with virtualization platforms along with a solid understanding of underlying infrastructure such as storage, networking, and host systems. Responsibilities include monitoring system health, applying patches and updates, ensuring high availability, and troubleshooting performance or connectivity issues. Experience with backup and disaster recovery strategies, security best practices, and automation tools for system administration is highly valued.
  • Functions as a Linux Systems Administrator - including system capacity planning, system upgrades, system performance and scheduled backups. Ensures the integrity and security of all servers and workstations. Administers scheduled system upgrades/patches as required.
  • In depth understanding of routing, switching, firewall rules, network protocols and experience administering Cisco and Juniper equipment.
  • May perform rotating on-call duties as necessary to support MEAG’s Metering and SCADA systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Information Technology/Systems, or a related field of study
  • At least 5-8 years of progressive experience in building, maintaining, and commissioning SCADA system displays and database points for an electric utility
  • Working for an electric utility in one or more of the following areas is also preferred: SCADA, metering, computer systems design, Operations & Maintenance, application development, systems administration, Data historian administration, and/or network administration
  • Experience with SEL RTACs and the Sentient Energy applications are considered a plus
  • A combination of education and demonstrated related work experience can be substituted for a college degree
