What Does a Computer Science Professor Do?
A computer science professor teaches at a technical college or university. You create and teach courses in computer science (CS) or related programming or technology subjects. In this career, you prepare the syllabus for each class, deliver lectures and instructions, and use exams and quizzes to assess the performance of students. In many computer science classes, your responsibilities include allowing students to practice the subject matter in a computer lab. You facilitate this practice and offer guidance during lab sessions. In addition to your teaching duties, you sometimes give academic or career advice to students in CS degree programs.

What is the difference between Computer Science Professor vs Software Developer?
| Aspect | Computer Science Professor | Software Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field | Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or related field; certifications optional |
| Work Environment | Academic institutions, research labs, universities | Corporate offices, tech companies, startups |
| Industry Usage | Research, teaching, academic publishing | Software development, product creation, coding |
| Common Search/Comparison | Yes | Yes |
While both roles involve computer science knowledge, a Computer Science Professor primarily focuses on teaching, research, and academic publishing, often requiring a Ph.D. and working in educational institutions. In contrast, a Software Developer applies programming skills to create software products in corporate or startup environments, typically with a bachelor's or master's degree. The roles differ in work environment, responsibilities, and career paths but share foundational computer science expertise.

Job description
Thank you for your interest in employment with Louisiana Tech University.
The College of Engineering and Science (COES) at Louisiana Tech University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Computer Science program. We seek highly qualified, research-active scholars specializing in cybersecurity and cyber operations. Candidates with expertise combining cybersecurity with artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing, robotics, smart health, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cyber-physical systems are encouraged to apply.
Louisiana Tech University, recognized as a national university by the 2024 U.S. News & World Report, is designated as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity for Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) and Cyber Research (CAE-R). The College of Engineering and Science is deeply committed to advancing cybersecurity research and education, addressing critical challenges such as cyber resilience, critical infrastructure protection, and emerging cyber threats. Faculty research efforts are supported by specialized research centers, including the Cybersecurity Applied Innovation Laboratory (CyAIL) and the Center for Secure Cyberspace (CSC), which facilitate collaborative research and provide opportunities for securing external research funding.
The College is experiencing significant growth, with nearly 3,000 students, including approximately 130 doctoral students among 300 graduate students. Annual research expenditures within the College have averaged $16 million over the past five years. The Computer Science program serves approximately 550 undergraduate majors and is the second-largest degree granting program at the university. Louisiana Tech offers multiple computing-oriented degree programs that support cybersecurity research and education, including the B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science, B.S. in Cyber Engineering, Ph.D. in Computational Analysis and Modeling (CAM), and Ph.D. in Engineering with a concentration in Cyberspace.
With the increasing frequency, sophistication, and impact of cyber threats, there is a pressing need for cutting-edge research and innovative educational programs in cybersecurity. Louisiana Tech is committed to strengthening its research and teaching capabilities in areas such as cyber threat intelligence and mitigation, reverse engineering and digital forensics, cyber operations and resilience, cryptography and secure communication, AI and machine learning for cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems and IoT security, and quantum computing and post-quantum cryptography. Candidates whose research addresses interdisciplinary cybersecurity challenges or integrates emerging technologies with security applications are particularly encouraged to apply.
Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field and demonstrate a strong record of scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed publications and the potential to establish a robust, externally funded research program. Candidates should exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, with the ability to develop and deliver cybersecurity-focused curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. They should also have a proven ability to mentor and advise students, along with strong written and oral communication skills. Faculty members are expected to conduct high-impact research, publish in leading academic venues, secure extramural research funding, develop and teach cybersecurity-related courses, engage in interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to the university's broader mission through service and leadership.
Applicants should submit a single PDF document containing a cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and full contact information for at least four references. Applications will be reviewed immediately and will continue until suitable candidates are identified. The anticipated start date for the position is September 1, 2025.
Louisiana Tech is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action/ADA Employer and places a high priority on the creation of an environment supportive of ethnic minorities, women, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
Please Note: Applications must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on the Job Closing Date to ensure consideration.
Note to Applicant:
