Part-Time Instructor of Culinary Arts

Arkansas State University-Newport

Arkansas State University - Newport (ASUN) is seeking applications for a Culinary Arts Instructor. This position is a part-time faculty position and will be housed on the Jonesboro campus.The instructor reports to the Dean for Applied Sciences and has responsibility for teaching and assessment of culinary courses at ASUN Jonesboro. Faculty members must demonstrate strong classroom management and development skills. The Part-Time Instructor of Culinary Arts will lead students in classroom instruction and assist with labs in the kitchen. The instructor will be required to create a learning environment where individuals feel physically, emotionally, and socially secure, enabling them to explore, take risks, and effectively engage in learning. The instructor will ensure that curriculum meets industry recognized standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Present classroom instruction that aligns with the college's mission.

Assist with hands on lab instruction and supervise student's use of equipment

Explain and demonstrate safe operation of kitchen equipment

Observe and evaluate student work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement

Present theory and practical application of culinary tasks

Follow Arkansas Department of Health Codes

Maintains accessibility to students via email, phone, or personal conferences.

Maintain course/student records such as grades, attendance, and training activity details in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit records by established deadlines

Collaborate with full-time faculty to maintain supplies and training facilities

Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Technical certificate or appropriate industry certification plus 3 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Preferred qualifications include an associate degree or appropriate industry certification(s) and/or three to five years' experience in the restaurant industry.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Strong communication and computer skills are required.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage, and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under general direction of the Dean for Applied Sciences, working from policies and general directives. Refers specific cases to supervisor when clarification or interpretation of the organization's policy when needed.

DECISION MAKING
Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and regular opportunity for decision-making of major importance, either of which would affect the work operations of the organization and the organization's customers.
ANALYTICAL ABILITY / PROBLEM SOLVING
Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.

USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT, AND/OR COMPUTERS
Regular use office equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software) and equipment found in the teaching discipline.
