What does a computer programmer do?

A computer programmer designs, tests, writes, debugs, and maintains the computer program code. The coding language is written for the computer to be able to comprehend it and take specific actions according to those commands. Computer programmers can work with existing code or create something entirely new. The objective of coding is to develop programs that act on specific controls and behaviors. Coders need to be able to work with specialized algorithms, logic, and app domain, as well. But the other key goal of a computer programmer is to design interfaces that regular non-technical users can easily understand and use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving skills, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with software development tools, version control systems like Git, and sometimes certifications in specific languages or frameworks are commonly required. Attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure high-quality, efficient code development and effective teamwork in rapidly evolving technical environments.

What are some typical challenges computer programmers face when working on large team projects?

Computer programmers working on large team projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating code changes, maintaining consistent coding standards, and managing dependencies between different components. Effective communication and the use of version control systems like Git are essential to prevent conflicts and ensure smooth collaboration. Additionally, programmers must often adapt to varying coding styles and workflows, making flexibility and a collaborative mindset important for success in team environments.

What is the difference between Computer Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectComputer ProgrammerSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or related fieldUsually requires a bachelor's degree, often with additional experience or certifications
Work EnvironmentOften works in coding, debugging, and maintaining softwareDesigns, develops, tests, and maintains software applications
Industry UsageCommonly employed in IT, software firms, and tech departmentsFound in a wide range of industries including tech, finance, healthcare

While both roles involve coding and software creation, Computer Programmers primarily focus on writing and debugging code based on specifications, whereas Software Developers are involved in designing and building complete software solutions. The roles often overlap, but Developers typically have broader responsibilities in the software development lifecycle.

How much do computer programmers get paid?

Computer programmers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but the median annual wage in many regions is around $70,000 to $85,000. Skilled programmers with knowledge of languages like Java, Python, or C++ and experience with software development tools tend to earn higher salaries, especially in tech hubs or specialized fields.

Is a computer programmer a good career?

A computer programmer is a viable career that involves writing, testing, and maintaining software using programming languages like Java, Python, or C++. It offers opportunities in various industries, often requires problem-solving skills and continuous learning, and can provide competitive salaries and job stability depending on experience and location.

What do you do as a computer programmer?

A computer programmer writes, tests, and maintains code to develop software applications, websites, or systems. They use programming languages like Java, Python, or C++ and often work with development tools and version control systems. Programmers analyze requirements, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with teams to ensure functionality and performance.

What kind of jobs can computer programmers get?

Computer programmers can work in various roles such as software developers, application programmers, web developers, and systems analysts. They often work in industries like technology, finance, healthcare, and government, and may require knowledge of programming languages, software development tools, and problem-solving skills.

Job description

Manufacturing Engineer

Manufacturing Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support design-for-manufacturability and production of high-quality medical devices, with a focus on orthopedic implants. The role will apply engineering principles to develop, optimize and document manufacturing processes for precision components and implantable devices. The successful candidate will partner with R&D, quality and production teams to improve yield, reduce cycle times and ensure compliance with medical device regulations.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and implement manufacturing processes for orthopedic implants and related medical devices, emphasizing precision, repeatability and regulatory compliance.
  • Translate product designs into robust manufacturing methods including CNC machining, grinding, EDM and finishing operations.
  • Perform process development and continuous improvement activities using root-cause analysis, FMEA, SPC and lean manufacturing principles to improve yield, quality and throughput.
  • Create and maintain process documentation: work instructions, process flow diagrams, control plans, and validation protocols required for medical device manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with design engineers on design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-testability (DFT) to optimize part geometry, tolerances and material selection.
  • Develop CNC programs and tooling specifications; support machine setup, first article builds and productionization.
  • Conduct tolerance analysis, machine dynamics assessment and tribology evaluations to ensure long-term performance and wear characteristics of implant surfaces.
  • Use advanced CAD for process planning, fixturing, and tolerance stack-ups; support engineering drawings and BOMs.
  • Apply computational tools such as CFD or other simulation methods where applicable to optimize coolant delivery, debris evacuation and process thermal control.
  • Lead cross-functional problem-solving for nonconforming product and supplier issues, and support corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Provide training and technical support to manufacturing operators and technicians to ensure consistent adherence to processes and quality standards.
  • Participate in design and execution of process validations, equipment qualification, and production scale-up activities in compliance with ISO 13485 and FDA requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or related engineering discipline; Masters degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in medical device production, ideally with orthopedic implants or precision implantable components.
  • Demonstrated experience with CNC programming, tooling, machine setup and process development for metal components.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing principles including DFM, lean, SPC, FMEA and GD&T.
  • Experience with tribology and machine dynamics related to component wear, surface finishes and bearing interfaces.
  • Hands-on proficiency with advanced CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA or NX) for modeling, tooling design and tolerance analysis.
  • Familiarity with computational tools such as CFD or machining simulations to optimize process conditions is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of medical device regulations and quality systems (ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR 820) and experience supporting process validation and documentation.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in root-cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills; ability to lead cross-functional projects and train production staff.
  • Preferred: experience with orthopedic implants, surface treatments, finishing processes and supplier management.
