Job description

A Day in the Life:

The Senior Manager, Payments Engineering leads the engineering team responsible for the design, build, and operation of Hertz's payment systems and integrations. Scope includes card-present, card-not-present, alternative payment methods, tokenization, payment orchestration, fraud signals, and the integrations that move payment data into reconciliation, settlement, and the General Ledger.

This role owns delivery, quality, on-call, production stability, hiring, performance, and budget for the payments engineering team, and partners closely with the Solutions Architect, Product, Information Security, Risk, Finance, and Operations. Payments are mission-critical to Hertz revenue; this leader ensures the engineering organization behind them is capable, disciplined, and continuously improving.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead, develop, and retain a team of Payments Engineers, plus QA / SDET roles supporting payments.
  • Set team goals and OKRs, manage performance, coach, and conduct talent reviews and succession planning.
  • Own engineering delivery for payment platforms, including throughput, quality, and predictability of releases.
  • Partner with Product, the Solutions Architect, and Information Security to plan and execute the payments engineering roadmap.
  • Lead engineering execution for major payment initiatives such as new gateway integrations, new payment methods, processor migrations, and fraud platform rollouts.
  • Own production stability, on-call rotation, incident response, and post-incident review for payment systems.
  • Drive measurable improvement in transaction success rate, latency, error budgets, and incident frequency.
  • Own engineering accountability for PCI DSS compliance posture across payment systems.
  • Partner with Internal Audit, the SOX PMO, and external auditors on payment-related controls and evidence.
  • Manage vendor relationships at the engineering level for processors, gateways, fraud tools, and SI partners.
  • Manage operating and project budget for the payments engineering team.
  • Establish and uphold engineering practices including code review, secure coding, test automation, deployment safety, and observability standards.
  • Partner with Reliability Engineering and Platform teams on resilience, scalability, and disaster recovery for payments.
  • Maintain a healthy on-call experience and engineer well-being.
  • Coordinate cross-functional readiness during peak periods including holidays, fleet repositioning windows, and major sales events.
  • Publish a monthly engineering scorecard covering reliability, throughput, quality, security, and cost.
  • Ensure compliance with all Corporate Policies and Procedures, PCI DSS, and SOX requirements.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field. MBA or Master's preferred.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 6+ years leading engineering teams.
  • Direct experience leading a team, building and operating production payment systems.
  • Hands-on knowledge of modern backend stacks (Java, Python, or similar) and event-driven / distributed architectures.
  • Strong understanding of PCI DSS scope, tokenization, vaulting, and secure key management.
  • Experience integrating with major payment gateways and processors such as Adyen, Cybersource, Stripe, Braintree, Worldpay, FIS, or ACI.
  • Demonstrated track record managing on-call posture, incident response, and reliability metrics for high-volume systems.
  • Experience managing vendor relationships and Statements of Work for payment platforms or SI partners.
  • Strong executive communication; comfortable presenting to Directors and VPs.
  • Effective project management, process planning, and implementation skills.
  • Industry experience in transportation, hospitality, retail, or marketplace businesses is a plus.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native deployment (AWS / Azure / GCP), Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Oracle Fusion AR, Cash Management, or enterprise reconciliation flows is a plus.

The starting salary is $140,000  with annual bonus and profit-sharing eligibility; actual salary will be determined based on years of relevant work experience.
