Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking a CAD Manager for the Ontario offices. The CAD Manager will develop means and methods for delivery of its contract documents. This includes, but is not limited to, development of BIM/CAD standards, working on and improving existing BIM/CAD execution for all phases of a project from conception to project closeout. The CAD Manager will assign appropriate resources for each project, review contract drawings against the industry, client and department standard practices for drawing quality. Wood offers the technical challenges of projects located throughout Ontario. This individual will; possess the ability to work as an integral part of a project team, interface with both internal and external project team members, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams.

The Computer Aided Design (BIM/CAD) engineered solutions team is responsible for creating and designing new and existing infrastructure using the latest in BIM/CAD technology. The team is responsible for developing and maintaining engineering designs using both Autodesk (Revit, Civil 3D) and Bentley (MicroStation, InRoads) software applications for new and existing infrastructure that may require a Building Information Modeling (BIM) process that integrates the model with data. BIM/CAD technology is used to streamline the engineering design processes and reduce errors, and with Autodesk's Navisworks - clash detection and interferences. This department is responsible for coordinating with the various disciplines to ensure the accuracy of the model and drawings used for final design and construction documents.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will manage a multi-disciplined engineering BIM/CAD design department providing engineering and architectural drawings, and models related to the design of new or existing facilities. The selected candidate will also be responsible for the administration of the BIM/CAD system, files, and standards. S/he will oversee the work of the departments designer/drafters, which are preparing design documents for compliance with standards. Design and drafting include Structural, Mechanical, Civil, Architectural, Environmental and Electrical design disciplines. S/he may also review and oversee staff review of designs prepared by outsourced engineering firms for the same types of facilities. 

 Responsibilities:

  • Highly proficient in modeling multiple disciplines (road, rail, municipal) within AutoDesk Civil 3D and or Bentley InRoads applications
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and Civil 3D applications and in training staff with these applications
  • Experience in content creation for AutoCAD and Civil 3D such as, annotative blocks, lisp, template files, custom parameters;
  • Provide leadership to CAD designers and technicians to ensure consistency and adherence to drawing templates, naming conventions, and standards;
  • Experience using Bentley ProjectWise or Autodesk BIM 360 is preferential.
  • Lead in the establishment and enforcement of CAD Standards/BIM execution plans, processes, policies and procedures
  • Maintain BIM/CAD drawing / model templates. Coordinate templates with each specific discipline
  • Internally coordinate, manage and create BIM standards and management plans
  • Determine required scope and level of effort of project work, including the degree of completeness and precision to which project elements should be addressed
  • Be a leader and mentor for all matters CAD/BIM for other CAD users in the team.
  • Monitors projects for errors and enforces model clean up and use of standards up by project team

  • Create and maintain guidance materials for new CAD users onboarding the operation
  • Provide recommendations to the department leads regarding CAD training needs
  • Coordinate with IT and CAD vendor as appropriate regarding software licenses and installations
  • Update staff on new features when new versions of CAD/BIM software are released
  • Experienced in the planning, layout, and details for the preparation of contract drawings
  • Work closely with engineers and senior designers on assigned projects, be able to read and understand engineering drawings and markups.
  • Perform thorough quality control (QA/QC) of models and sheet files for standards compliance and discipline coordination.
  • Be able to handle multiple, demanding, and complex projects in a timely manner with accurate results.
  • Create designs independently under broad direction from the Project Engineer or Project Manager on various design projects

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of BIM and the requirements for BIM collaboration.
  • Strong and substantial experience in the development and coordinating 3D models.
  • Expertise in different 3D CAD software and an understanding of the methods of integrating 3D CAD models.
  • Ability to establish CAD systems and BIM procedures.
  • Good technical and management skills including problem solving and decision making.
  • Strong organizational, writing and communication skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to ensure effective communication to all levels to both internal and external personnel.
  • Familiarity with standard office software including word processors, spreadsheets, e-mail, presentations and databases.
