Job description

Position Title: Mechanical Designer

Target Experience: Entry Level, 0-4 years experience

Department: Application Engineering

Location: Trafford, PA

About Us

Cleaveland/Price specializes in the design and manufacture of high voltage disconnect switches and switch automation products.  The products that we offer are unique in design, and some include patented features. Products have been developed and tested in accordance with IEEE, ANSI, and NEMA standards for high voltage equipment. They are primarily used by investor-owned and public electric utilities and large industrial operations in substation, distribution, transmission, and generation applications.

All company operations take place in a modern 218,300 sq. ft. multi-site facility situated on 20 acres east of Trafford, PA. The facility houses virtually all resources for product realization, including engineering, supply chain, parts fabrication, electro-mechanical assembly, and testing. Fabrication capabilities include laser and plasma cutting, CNC machining, CNC punching, and automated bending and forming. The company also utilizes specialized processes, such as MIG and TIG welding, friction welding, silver and tin electroplating, and silver brazing.

Your Goal

You will play a key role in the creation and improvement of mechanical products. You will not only design, evaluate, and assist in developing these parts and products, but also create and maintain design standards, drafting procedures, and technical drawings. Your expertise allows you to design new or improve existing products, ensuring they meet engineering specifications and customer needs. Additionally, you would actively participate in product development activities such as interpreting and implementing customer specifications, laying out designs, and ensuring all documentation requirements are met. This comprehensive skillset makes you a valuable asset in the product development process.

Your Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a supervisor or a more experienced engineer, you will:

  • Create and maintain design standards, drafting standards, and Bill of Material sheets.
  • Design moderately complex new products and parts, improve existing products and parts based on engineering specifications.
  • Designs plans using computer-aided design (CAD) software. (AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault preferred)
  • Work from rough sketches and specifications through the manufacturing and testing process, proactively responding to questions and change requests.
  • Interface with customers to design to their specifications. Also reviewing, validating, or requesting information needed to complete a job.
  • Works closely with engineers to create and improve manufacturing systems and processes, and to develop drawings for a wide variety of machines and/or mechanical devices.
  • A general knowledge of material and hardware selection.

Your Background

  • Associate Degree in Mechanical Design or related field
  • Understand engineering principles (mechanics, statics, dynamics) to analyze forces and motion in designs.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for creating and refining 3D models.
  • Interpret data and specifications to meet design requirements.
  • Interact effectively with engineers, manufacturers, and stakeholders.
  • Develop creative and efficient mechanical solutions.
  • This position is available at two different career levels depending on experience, education, etc. 
  • Level I: 0-2 years of experience.
  • Level II: 2-4 years of experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal.
  • Requires concentration, accuracy, and focused mental effort while multi-tasking in a team environment.
  • Ability to wear standard personal protective equipment (PPE) required while on the shop floor or in other work area where mandated (i.e. steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, and/or other applicable PPE).
