Job description

As engineers, architects, construction/program managers, environmental professionals and beyond, we play a significant role in shaping our communities through the services we provide. We are looking for passionate, driven individuals to join our team focused on Delivering Solutions and Improving Lives.

The entry-level Computer Aided Drafter/Designer learns to be proficient in preparing construction drawings and documents for multiple systems, including natural gas transmission and distribution pipelines, substation, underground, and overhead electrical projects including physical layouts, elevations, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Technicians develop a basic understanding of project requirements. This role works on a team with designers and engineers applies information electronic drawing files.


  • Use computer-aided drafting tools such as AutoCAD & AutoCAD Civil 3D, and MicroStation, as well as technical handbooks, utility standards, tables, and calculators
  • Confer with design engineers and other staff members to resolve problems and create construction documents
  • Learn to prepare quantity take-offs in a professional and organized manner
  • Work under the direction of senior designers and engineers
  • Meet client and NV5’s requirements and standards
  • Manage and maintain design records and files
  • Learn to complete as-built drawings
  • Gain confidence in ability to fulfill assignments that require independent judgment and evaluation
  • Able to work semi-independently with little supervision
  • Develop career via peer-learning through sharing of knowledge with other experienced designers and engineers

  • Qualifications:
  • 1+ years’ experience in the utility, electrical, or civil industry
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Positive attitude, able to collaboratively work with others
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other relevant software
  • Fundamental training in the use of computer-aided drafting software, including CAD Suite, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Revit
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Certificate of Training in technical drafting or equivalent work in an engineering environment
  • Experience drafting civil or utility drawings
  • 1-2 years of AutoCAD Civil 3D experience
