What is a computer assistant?

A computer assistant uses their technical and communication skills to help people troubleshoot problems with their computers. Sometimes referred to as technical support or customer support staff, computer assistants know about computers and the software they run. Their primary job duties include listening to customers describe the problems they are having and then walking them through a series of steps to get any issues resolved. Depending on the company you work for, you may also assist employees with their computer setups and help develop training guides. Some computer assistants work in call centers while others communicate exclusively through online chat or email. The minimum educational qualifications for this career include a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate, although some employers may prefer you to have an associate degree in computer science and previous experience in a similar role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Assistant, you need strong knowledge of computer hardware, software applications, troubleshooting techniques, and typically at least an associate degree in a related field. Familiarity with operating systems, office productivity software, basic networking, and help desk ticketing systems is commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and patience are valuable soft skills for this position. These skills ensure efficient technical support, minimize downtime, and foster a productive work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by computer assistants in supporting end-users, and how can they effectively address them?

Computer Assistants often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting diverse hardware and software issues, managing multiple support requests simultaneously, and explaining technical concepts to users with varying levels of computer literacy. To address these challenges effectively, strong organizational and communication skills are essential. Building a knowledge base of common solutions, prioritizing tickets based on urgency, and maintaining patience and empathy with users can greatly enhance the support experience and lead to improved outcomes.

Job description

CAD Draftsperson / 3D Designer

SketchUp / Rhino | Custom Fabrication & Event Production

Location: Hicksville, NY
Pay: $20–$30 per hour
Job Type: Full-Time

We are looking for a CAD Draftsperson / 3D Designer to create detailed drawings and 3D models for custom fabrication, event production, scenic builds, millwork, displays, and installations.

The ideal candidate is proficient in SketchUp and/or Rhino and understands how to turn a creative concept into a design that can actually be built. This position will work closely with our project managers and fabrication team to develop designs from initial concept through production.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using SketchUp, Rhino, or similar software
  • Develop shop drawings from concepts, sketches, renderings, and field measurements
  • Produce dimensioned plans, elevations, sections, and construction details
  • Design custom event structures, scenic elements, displays, millwork, signage, and fixtures
  • Translate client and designer concepts into fabrication-ready drawings
  • Make revisions based on client feedback and production requirements
  • Work directly with carpenters, CNC operators, printers, metal fabricators, and installation crews
  • Review designs for constructability and identify potential fabrication issues before production
  • Assist with material selection and efficient use of sheet goods and other materials
  • Prepare files for CNC and other digital fabrication processes when required
  • Maintain organized project drawings and revisions
  • Verify critical dimensions before releasing projects for fabrication

Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in SketchUp and/or Rhino
  • Experience with CAD drafting, 3D modeling, or technical design
  • Ability to create accurate, clearly dimensioned drawings
  • Strong understanding of scale, measurements, and spatial relationships
  • Ability to interpret sketches, architectural drawings, and design concepts
  • Understanding of basic construction and fabrication methods
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet production deadlines
  • Good communication skills and ability to work directly with project managers and fabricators

Preferred Experience

  • Event production or scenic fabrication
  • Custom millwork
  • Exhibits and trade shows
  • Retail displays
  • Architectural fabrication
  • CNC routing
  • Woodworking
  • Basic metal fabrication
  • Large-format printing and signage
  • AutoCAD or similar CAD software
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • V-Ray, Enscape, or other rendering software
  • Grasshopper or parametric modeling

What We're Looking For

This is a production-focused design position, not strictly an architectural or conceptual design role. We need someone who understands that drawings must communicate clearly to the people actually building the project.

The right candidate can take a concept and determine how it should be constructed, how the pieces fit together, and how to clearly document it for fabrication and installation.
