Draftsman / CAD Designer

Metal Fabrication Manufacturing


Position Summary

The Draftsman is responsible for creating accurate engineering drawings, fabrication layouts, assembly drawings, and manufacturing documentation for metal fabrication projects. This role works closely with engineering, production, sales, and project management teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet customer specifications. The ideal candidate has strong CAD skills, attention to detail, and experience in sheet metal, welding, and fabricated steel products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create detailed fabrication, assembly, and installation drawings using CAD software.
  • Develop 2D and 3D models for metal fabrication projects.
  • Generate shop drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), cut lists, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Review customer drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to optimize designs for manufacturability.
  • Revise drawings based on engineering changes, customer requests, and production feedback.
  • Maintain drawing revisions and document control procedures.
  • Ensure drawings comply with company standards, industry standards, and customer requirements.
  • Support estimating and project management teams with technical drawings and material takeoffs.
  • Assist in the development of standard products and fabrication processes.
  • Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing personnel during production.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered.

Experience

  • 2+ years of drafting or CAD design experience in a manufacturing or metal fabrication environment preferred.
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication, welding, machining, or structural steel is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD software.
  • Ability to create detailed fabrication and assembly drawings.
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes including:
    • Sheet metal fabrication
    • Welding
    • CNC cutting
    • Forming and bending
    • Machining
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems is a plus.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
