| Aspect | Computer Assistant | Data Entry Clerk |

| Required Credentials | High school diploma; some roles may require basic IT certifications | High school diploma; familiarity with data management software |
| Work Environment | Offices, schools, or organizations supporting IT tasks | Offices, data centers, or administrative settings |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Educational institutions, small businesses, tech support | Corporate, healthcare, government, and administrative sectors |
| Common Search & Comparison | Often compared for entry-level IT support roles | Compared for administrative data handling tasks |
Computer Assistants and Data Entry Clerks often share similar work environments and entry-level credentials. However, Computer Assistants typically support IT functions and troubleshooting, while Data Entry Clerks focus on inputting and managing data. Both roles are essential in administrative and organizational settings, but they serve different primary functions within organizations.
A computer assistant uses their technical and communication skills to help people troubleshoot problems with their computers. Sometimes referred to as technical support or customer support staff, computer assistants know about computers and the software they run. Their primary job duties include listening to customers describe the problems they are having and then walking them through a series of steps to get any issues resolved. Depending on the company you work for, you may also assist employees with their computer setups and help develop training guides. Some computer assistants work in call centers while others communicate exclusively through online chat or email. The minimum educational qualifications for this career include a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate, although some employers may prefer you to have an associate degree in computer science and previous experience in a similar role.

The School of Computer Science at the University of Guelph invites applications for two (2) tenure-track positions in Software Engineering & AI / Applied AI at the Assistant Professor level, with an earliest start date of January 1, 2027.
QualificationsÂ
The search is restricted to candidates whose research and teaching interests are in the areas of Software Engineering and AI.Â
Education and BackgroundÂ
At the time of appointment, candidates are required to have a PhD in Computer Science or a related field. Previous academic experience, including post-doctoral or prior academic appointments will be considered an asset. Relevant industrial experience will also be taken into consideration.Â
ScholarshipÂ
The successful candidate should have remarkable scholarship in Computer Science with demonstrated impact. The candidate must propose an independent and fundable scholarship program in their Scholarship Statement and demonstrate their ability to conduct innovative scholarship that complements the school's current scholarship strengths.Â
TeachingÂ
The candidate must have a keen interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching. They must demonstrate their ability to teach university-level courses that align with their background. They should be capable of teaching core computer science undergraduate courses at all levels and graduate courses related to their scholarship area. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in supervising students and/or staff on scholarship-oriented projects.Â
ServiceÂ
Evidence of community engagement is crucial, such as organizing conferences, participating in outreach, volunteering, or being involved in student clubs or councils. Such evidence demonstrates the candidate's ability to provide service to the School, University, and research community.Â
ExpectationsÂ
The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally recognized scholarship program and secure external funding from tri-council agencies (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) or similarly prestigious funding agencies. They will also be expected to supervise graduate students in the current MSc and PhD programs. The candidate will typically teach three courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 80% of their time will be divided equally between scholarship and teaching, with the remaining 20% for providing service to the School, College, University, and scholarship community at large.Â
School of Computer ScienceÂ
As of Fall 2025, the School of Computer Science has 1,200+ undergraduate students enrolled across its three undergraduate programs and 100+ graduate students in its four graduate programs. It is currently experiencing a growth cycle in both undergraduate and graduate enrollments. The School is currently supported by 28 faculty members and 8 staff members.
