What does a computer administrator do?

A computer administrator manages and maintains an organization's computer systems, including servers, networks, and user accounts. They install, update, and troubleshoot hardware and software, ensure security protocols are followed, and often use tools like network monitoring software. Strong technical skills and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified are common requirements.

Will sysadmin be replaced by AI?

Computer administrators, or sysadmins, perform tasks such as managing networks, servers, and security systems. While AI and automation tools can handle routine tasks, sysadmins are still needed for complex problem-solving, system design, and oversight, making complete replacement unlikely in the near future.

Job description

We are looking for an Application Support Engineer to oversee a mission-critical SolidWorks environment that supports engineering teams across multiple manufacturing sites in New Berlin, Wisconsin. This contract opportunity with permanent potential is ideal for someone who combines strong application administration skills with hands-on user support in a technical design setting. The person in this role will become the go-to resource for platform performance, issue resolution, and system optimization while partnering closely with engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams. You will also contribute to a planned SolidWorks upgrade and build the documentation and support practices needed for long-term success.
Responsibilities:
• Lead administration of the SolidWorks environment, ensuring reliable system performance and consistent availability for engineering users.
• Deliver daily support to design and engineering teams by diagnosing application issues and resolving user-reported problems in a timely manner.
• Investigate and correct technical concerns involving assemblies, file relationships, vault activity, permissions, workflows, and overall application behavior.
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to improve how the platform is used within engineering, manufacturing, and operational processes.
• Take part in the upcoming SolidWorks upgrade by supporting planning, testing, issue remediation, and user readiness efforts.
• Maintain system settings, access controls, configurations, and other administrative functions required for effective platform management.
• Create and update clear documentation covering procedures, support guidance, and recommended practices for end users and administrators.
• Provide user guidance and practical training that helps teams work more effectively within the application environment.
• Support teams across multiple locations, including international users, while building toward full ownership of the application landscape through knowledge transfer.
• Monitor recurring issues and identify opportunities to strengthen stability, efficiency, and the overall user experience.• 5+ years of experience supporting enterprise engineering applications, including direct administration of SolidWorks environments.
• Demonstrated background in application support with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues affecting engineering and design users.
• Hands-on experience with CAD software, including SolidWorks and related engineering design tools.
• Working knowledge of system administration concepts such as user access, workflow setup, configuration management, and vault or document control support.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly and provide effective assistance or training to end users.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively.
• Experience collaborating with engineering stakeholders and business partners in manufacturing or similar technical environments.
• Exposure to multi-site or international user support is valued, and Spanish language skills are a plus.
