What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Component Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Component Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with component selection and qualification. Familiarity with CAD tools, PLM systems, and industry standards such as RoHS and REACH compliance is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate across engineering, procurement, and manufacturing teams. These skills ensure that components meet performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements, reducing risk and ensuring successful product development.

What are some common challenges faced by component engineers when working with cross-functional teams?

Component engineers often collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and procurement teams to ensure that selected parts meet quality, cost, and timeline requirements. One common challenge is managing conflicting priorities, such as balancing design preferences with supply chain constraints or production schedules. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as component engineers must negotiate trade-offs and keep all stakeholders informed of changes or risks. Building strong relationships across departments helps streamline the process and leads to better overall project outcomes.

What is component engineering?

Component engineering is a specialized field within engineering that focuses on the selection, validation, and management of individual parts or components used in larger products or systems. Component engineers ensure that each component meets technical, quality, and regulatory requirements, and they work closely with design, manufacturing, and procurement teams to resolve issues and optimize performance. Their responsibilities often include evaluating new parts, managing component obsolescence, and maintaining documentation to support product reliability and compliance.

Job description

Role Summary

The Sales Engineer is a field-based role responsible for driving new business, developing client relationships, and owning projects from initial quote through engineering completion. This position blends outside sales with hands-on engineering and project management. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable presenting to decision-makers as they are designing control system solutions and managing project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, pursue, and close new business opportunities through direct outreach, referrals, networking, and industry events.
  • Conduct on-site assessments of client facilities to understand requirements, constraints, and project scope.
  • Develop detailed project quotes, proposals, and scopes of work, including Bill of Materials, labor estimates, and engineering specifications.
  • Secure down payments from clients to initiate project work.
  • Own the engineering design for awarded projects, including control system architecture, panel layouts, electrical schematics, and integration plans.
  • Manage projects from kickoff through delivery, coordinating timelines, budgets, resources, and client communication.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring expectations are met and issues are resolved promptly.
  • Collaborate with internal teams on fabrication, programming, and commissioning activities.
  • Maintain a healthy sales pipeline and provide regular forecasting and activity reports.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitor offerings to position ICS competitively in the market.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in outside/field sales within industrial automation, controls, electrical, or a closely related technical industry.
  • Proven engineering ability: capable of independently designing and specifying control systems, electrical panels, or automation solutions.
  • Project management experience: track record of managing technical projects through full lifecycle, including scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Strong independent problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate complex technical challenges and develop practical solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle. Mileage is reimbursed at the current IRS standard rate ($0.725/mile).

Education

One of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation/Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Equivalent combination of technical training, certifications, and hands-on professional experience in automation, controls, or related engineering fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms).
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and SolidWorks Electrical for 3D modeling and electrical schematic design.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A standards and industrial panel design.
  • Six Sigma, Lean, or other continuous improvement certification.
  • Basic mechanical and fabrication skills, including proficiency with power tools, manual mill, lathe, and welding.
  • Established network of contacts in manufacturing, process, or industrial sectors in the Tampa Bay area.

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary plus commission/performance-based incentives.
  • Retirement plan with up to 3% company match.
  • Mileage reimbursement at the current IRS standard rate.
  • Company expense account for documented business meals with clients and meals during overnight travel.
  • Opportunity to take ownership of projects end-to-end in a growing company.
  • Exposure to a wide variety of industries, technologies, and engineering challenges.
  • A collaborative, low-bureaucracy environment where your contributions have direct impact.
