G.A. West & Company is seeking a Safety Director for a full-time, long-term opportunity in Creola, Alabama. Details are listed below:
Position Overview:
This opportunity includes preparation to step into the lead role for a top 400 Industrial Construction Firm. The new Safety Director will work along with the existing Safety Director to ensure a seamless transition. The Safety Director will manage the Area Safety Managers and the deployment of the Site Safety Professionals across the various work sites. The safety director will lead, guide, and direct the Safety Department professionals to ensure the highest level of OSHA and client compliance. The Safety Director will work hand-in-hand with G.A. West Compliance, Human Resources, and Document Control Managers to ensure synchronization of recordkeeping, inclusive of but not limited to HIPAA protected pre-employment information, training records, certifications, JSAs, near misses, SIFs, and all OSHA and regulatory required documentation.
The G.A. West Safety Director Role requires the ability to mentor/coach and manage team members, handle departmental raises, advancements, and safety candidate selection and evaluation.
The G.A. West Safety Director will work actively to advance entry level site safety officers to complete their CSP, CHST, and other higher-level OSHA training.
G.A. West operates exclusively in the heavy industrial market and has a fleet of cranes to support our field operations effort. The selected candidate must be familiar with the OSHA requirements involved with lift plans, crane inspections, crane operator certification, rigger certification, and flagman certification.
The G.A. West Safety Director will support and report to the ES&H Director and the CEO, staying in constant communication in regard to daily safety performance. This includes the reporting and handling of insurance claims.
The G.A. West Safety Director will be self-deployed to visit the project sites on a routine basis to interact with client contemporaries. Constant contact and continuous communication with field safety representatives and other managers through weekly Teams calls and periodic in-person visits is required. Some job sites will require overnight stays to visit.
The G.A. West Safety Director will participate in continuous monitoring of OSHA accidents and audit trends, ensuring new regulations are accounted for in the G.A. West Corporate Safety Manual and training.
The G.A. West Safety Director will maintain the OSHA 300 log and support the required reporting, including internal and client trend tracking.
The G.A. West Safety Director will support the corporate Drug and Alcohol Policy and the required testing.
Requirements are as follows:
  • 10+ years of construction safety experience managing complex, large-scale projects, including but not limited to, mission-critical, heavy industrial, oil/gas, etc.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential is required to be considered for this role.
  • Formal safety training and competency in hazardous energy control and LOTO, scaffolding, crane management, steel erection, emergency response, fall management, excavation and confined space, rigging, and environmental hazard recognition.
  • Extensive training and experience in Incident Investigations including Root Cause Analysis.
  • Ability to identify and correct safety deficiencies in the field.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively interact with employees (blue collar and white collar) at all levels in a construction environment.
  • Candidate should be able to assemble and comfortably present safety materials to large groups both internally within the company and externally to clients.
  • Candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other technology applications used to support our safety efforts.
  • Preferred additional certifications/attributes:
    • Bachelor's degree in a Health & Safety related program from an accredited institution
    • OSHA 500
    • NCCCO Crane Operator Instructor Certification or equivalent
    • Certified Crane Inspector Certification
    • Bilingual
