What is a competitive cyclist?

Competitive cyclists are athletes who participate in organized cycling races and events, such as road races, time trials, criteriums, track cycling, or mountain bike competitions. They train intensively to improve their speed, endurance, and tactical skills. Competitive cyclists often belong to cycling clubs or teams and follow structured training plans to prepare for races. Their goal is to achieve the best possible performance, whether at the amateur or professional level.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a competitive cyclist?

To thrive as a Competitive Cyclist, you need excellent physical conditioning, advanced cycling techniques, and a solid understanding of training principles, often supported by participation in accredited races and coaching programs. Familiarity with cycling computers, power meters, GPS devices, and bike maintenance tools is crucial for optimizing performance and tracking progress. Mental toughness, discipline, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These skills and qualities are essential for achieving peak performance, enduring demanding races, and consistently improving in a highly competitive environment.

What are some common challenges faced by competitive cyclists in balancing training and recovery?

Competitive cyclists often face the challenge of balancing intense training sessions with adequate recovery to avoid overtraining and injury. Maintaining this balance requires careful planning, listening to one's body, and working closely with coaches or sports scientists to tailor training loads. Additionally, many cyclists juggle travel, competitions, and sometimes part-time work or studies, adding to the complexity of managing rest. Prioritizing sleep, nutrition, and active recovery methods is essential for long-term performance and health in this demanding sport.

Job description

Adventure is our Culture. Join a team that celebrates a lifestyle as bold as the terrain we love. At Backcountry, we are rooted in adventure, recognition, and wellbeing on and off the mountain. We spotlight employee stories, celebrate milestones, and offer exclusive outdoor perks. Whether you are at HQ, in a retail store, or remote, you will be part of a team that thrives on energy, exploration, and connection.

Reports to: Managing Editor

Location: Cottonwood Heights, Utah (Hybrid - 3x/week in-office)

About the Role:

Backcountry needs a senior copywriter who can deliver compelling marketing copy across every major channel for Backcountry, Competitive Cyclist, Steep & Cheap, and our other brands—while leading the editorial team's adoption of AI to build smarter, faster workflows.

As Senior Marketing Copywriter, you will own messaging end to end, ensuring each brand's voice stays consistent while adapting your writing to different audiences, campaigns, and customer journeys. Success in the first year means delivering exceptional copy that moves performance metrics, raising the quality bar for the broader team, and establishing scalable AI-driven editorial processes that the team actually uses.

This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.

What You'll Do:
  • Write compelling, high-performing marketing copy across email, SMS, paid social, display, landing pages, site merchandising, and other customer touchpoints for Backcountry and Competitive Cyclist.
  • Adapt messaging to each brand's distinct voice and audience—from Backcountry's outdoor enthusiasts to Competitive Cyclist's performance-driven riders—while tailoring copy for each marketing channel.
  • Own brand voice, tone, and editorial standards across campaign marketing, auditing existing content for consistency, identifying gaps, and partnering with the Managing Editor to evolve style guidelines.
  • Optimize copy using customer insights, SEO best practices, A/B test results, and conversion data to continually improve campaign performance and engagement.
  • Lead the editorial team's AI adoption by building prompt libraries, documenting best practices, establishing quality standards, and introducing workflows that increase speed without sacrificing creativity or brand integrity.
  • Evaluate emerging AI tools and workflows, testing new capabilities and recommending improvements that help the team produce better work, faster.
  • Review peer copy, providing thoughtful feedback that strengthens quality, consistency, and the team's overall craft.
  • Partner closely with Merchandising, Creative, Marketing, eCommerce, and SEO teams to deliver cohesive campaigns, communicate timelines clearly, and proactively identify risks before launch.
  • Balance speed with editorial excellence, delivering polished, accurate copy under tight deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of professional copywriting or editorial experience, preferably in ecommerce, retail, or consumer marketing.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a demonstrated ability to adapt tone across brands and channels.
  • Experience writing high-performing marketing copy across email, digital marketing, web, and paid media.
  • Demonstrated experience using generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar) to improve creative workflows, paired with strong editorial judgment and quality control.
  • Experience developing prompts, workflows, or documentation that help teams effectively use AI in content production.
  • Strong understanding of SEO, LLM optimization, conversion copywriting, and performance-driven marketing.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines consistently.
  • Collaborative mindset with experience partnering across creative, marketing, merchandising, and ecommerce teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bike riding and cycling-specific writing experience.
Why Join:

The people who do best here are builders. They take ownership, move fast, and want to see the direct impact of their work.

  • Cross-Functional Impact: Your copy touches every major marketing channel across multiple brands—email, SMS, paid social, site, and beyond. You will work closely with Merchandising, Creative, Marketing, eCommerce, and SEO teams to shape how Backcountry and Competitive Cyclist show up to customers.
  • AI-First Skill Building: Lead the editorial team's AI adoption hands-on—build prompt libraries, test emerging tools, and define workflows that become the standard for how the team produces content.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Own brand voice and editorial standards across campaigns, with access to performance data that shows what resonates, converts, and deserves another iteration.
  • Competitive Benefits: Paid time off policies, 401(k) match, medical/dental/vision and a variety of supplemental policies, and employee discounts across our portfolio of brands.
Interview Process:
  1. Recruiter Screen - A 45-minute conversation with our recruiting team to align on the role, your background, and what you are looking for.
  2. Hiring Manager Interview - Conversation with the Managing Editor focused on your writing approach, brand voice adaptability, and experience with AI-driven editorial workflows.
  3. In-Person Interview - We'd like to meet you at our Cottonwood Heights office. Details and logistics will be arranged with your recruiter.
  4. Reference Checks - Conducted in parallel with the final stages where possible.
  5. Offer - We move quickly for the right candidate.

Interview process is subject to change. Any updates will be communicated promptly and clearly.
