What is a compensation manager?

A compensation manager is part of a corporate HR team which researches and develops the pay policies in a company. They use research to help determine fair pay scales for all the company employees. Duties include helping the business with recruiting and integrating new employees. At a small company, they might be responsible for all aspects of the pay system, while at a larger company they may have specific responsibilities, such as doing market research or surveying workers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a compensation manager?

To thrive as a Compensation Manager, you need expertise in compensation analysis, benefits administration, and compliance, often supported by a degree in human resources or business and relevant certifications such as CCP (Certified Compensation Professional). Familiarity with HRIS systems, data analytics tools, and compensation benchmarking software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you design competitive pay structures and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills ensure fair, data-driven compensation practices that support employee satisfaction and organizational goals.

What are some common challenges compensation managers face when designing competitive pay structures?

Compensation Managers often navigate the challenge of balancing internal equity, market competitiveness, and budget constraints when designing pay structures. They must ensure that compensation packages attract and retain top talent while staying compliant with regulations and maintaining fairness across the organization. Additionally, Compensation Managers regularly analyze market data, manage employee expectations, and collaborate with HR and leadership to support organizational goals. These complexities require strong analytical skills, communication, and the ability to adapt to changing market trends.

Job description

Our Ideal Candidate as Human Resources Manager owns the systems that keep our people paid, protected, on the road, and our company moving forward in our growth driven systems.

A-1 Little John is a fast-growing site services company across North Texas and Southern Oklahoma — and we're looking for an HR Manager who thrives on precision, compliance, and building systems that scale. This isn't a generalist HR role. It's a high-ownership seat where you'll run payroll, benefits, HRIS, and DOT credentialing for the entire company, and be the backbone that keeps every leader executing consistently.

If you love clean systems, airtight documentation, and being the person people trust to get it right the first time — this is your role.

What You'll OWN:

HR Systems & Employee Lifecycle

  • Serve as the primary owner of Paycor — data integrity, workflows, and system utilization
  • Manage onboarding, job changes, and org updates in line with policy and audit standards
  • Collaborate with our HRIS IT Partner on workflow configuration, security roles, and system enhancements

Hiring, Performance & Accountability

  • Educate and ensure every department manager consistently follows company hiring, performance, and accountability systems
  • Maintain all employee, performance, and termination documentation
  • Coordinate terminations end-to-end across internal and external platforms

Benefits, Vendor & Insurance Administration

  • Own benefits administration from eligibility through carrier reconciliation
  • Manage broker and vendor relationships, renewals, and plan changes
  • Administer the company's insurance policy

Payroll & Timekeeping Compliance

  • Own full-cycle payroll and PTO administration for the entire company
  • Train managers on accurate time tracking and approval practices
  • Ensure compliance with wage, hour, and garnishment requirements

DOT Screening, Credentialing & Fleet Compliance

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for background checks, drug/alcohol testing, and DOT credentialing
  • Keep every driver and safety-sensitive file complete and audit-ready
  • Own fleet registration and regulation compliance

Workforce & Workers' Compensation

  • Manage workforce administration processes company-wide
  • Own workers' comp from claims coordination through return-to-work

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Build HR dashboards tracking headcount, attrition, tenure, and credentialing status
  • Continuously improve HR processes, documentation, and controls

What we expect YOU to BRING:

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business Administration, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of progressive HR operations experience with hands-on HRIS and benefits ownership
  • Proven experience administering Paycor or a similar HRIS/payroll platform
  • Track record owning payroll compliance, benefits operations, and workers' comp administration
  • Experience coordinating DOT screening and third-party credentialing programs
  • Exceptional attention to detail, documentation, and deadlines
  • Strong communicator who builds trust across leadership, managers, IT, and outside partners

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, commensurate with experience
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Company Retirement Plan with Match
  • Paid Time Off

Our Core Values

At A-1 Little John, every team member rides for the brand, brings grit to every job, and shows up as a problem solver and a team player. We hold each other to a standard of respect, communication, and attention to detail — and we're always looking to coach each other to the next level.
