POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Life Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operation, safety, and guest services of the shelter environment. This role oversees facility safety and cleanliness, guest check-in processes, administrative support functions, and coordination of shelter activities and services. The Coordinator ensures a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for guests, visitors, staff, and volunteers while supporting the Mission’s purpose of serving individuals experiencing homelessness. This position combines operational oversight of shelter activities with front-line guest services responsibilities including intake support, communication, record management, and coordination with internal departments. The Coordinator works closely with supervisors and leadership to ensure shelter operations run efficiently and guests are supported with dignity and respect.


RESPONSIBILITIES

General

  • Responsible for the security and safety of the facility, guests, staff, and visitors during assigned shifts.
  • Ensures the facility remains free from drugs, alcohol, weapons, or other hazards that jeopardize the Mission or its guests.
  • Handles guest interactions professionally while maintaining a safe environment.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the Safety Manual and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
  • Responds to emergencies and contacts first responders when necessary.
  • Maintains a visible presence throughout the facility during shifts.
  • Greets guests, visitors, and donors and ensures all individuals are checked in appropriately.
  • Helps maintain an environment where guests feel safe and are encouraged to pursue next steps toward stability.
  • Ensures delivery of basic services according to established policies and schedules.
  • Coordinates with other departments such as Kitchen, Maintenance, IT, and Operations to support daily operational needs.
  • Ensures guests who have been “Asked to Leave” (ATL) are not permitted entry and are directed to the proper appeal process.
  • Ensures the shelter facility is cleaned and maintained according to established standards.
  • Maintains and tracks inventory supplies used in daily shelter operations.
  • Ensures scheduled activities and services occur on time.
  • Maintains operational knowledge of facility systems including fire alarms, utilities shut-offs and building systems.
  • Inputs maintenance and IT requests when needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality when handling guest or organizational information.
  • Works with supervisors to ensure proper staffing coverage and scheduling needs.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisors or leadership.

Shelter/HMIS Responsibilities

  • Directs new guests through the intake process and facilitates smooth transitions into services.
  • Answers and routes incoming calls while providing accurate information about services and referral agencies.
  • Maintains accurate records in systems such as SCRIBE and Clarity.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Occasional lifting up to 35 pounds, bending, and climbing stairs.
  • Frequent interaction with individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental illness, and other complex challenges.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Work is performed in a high-traffic environment with frequent interruptions.
