Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, communicate with parents, teachers and administrators regarding attendance and other issues regarding identified students; provide assistance to school families and promote student and parent involvement in school and District programs, services and activities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Advise parents and students regarding regular attendance, providing information concerning school rules and regulations; make referrals to appropriate school and District programs and services. E
Communicate school concerns such as truancy, attitude, health issues to parents and community concerns to school; assist parents in communicating individual concerns in meetings with Principal or others. E
Promote parent and child participation in school by assuring dissemination of information; provide both parent and child with identifiable reference source and encourage parent involvement in school activities and classes. E
Assist administrators, teachers and others by translating verbal conversations and written communications. E
Administer language proficiency tests to limited and non-English speaking students.E
Make home visits to provide information to parents, investigate home situations and explain rules, regulations, procedures and forms. E
Contact police agencies, probation officers, social service organizations and others to exchange information and discuss concerns regarding individual students. E
Prepare and maintain records, reports and documentation including home visit reports, translations, memoranda, correspondence and meeting notifications. E
Attend workshops and conferences related to the needs and concerns of ethnic and minority groups. E
Provide emergency transportation to sick students as required.
Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
School attendance policies and procedures.
Cultural background of minority, ethnic and disadvantaged groups.
Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Telephone techniques and etiquette.
Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws.

ABILITY TO:
Promote school/community relations.
Assist parents and students in resolving school/student related problems.
Read, write, translate and interpret English and a designated second language.
Promote parent and child participation in school.
Utilize a second designated language to communicate with students and parents both orally and in writing.
Assist administrators, teachers and others by translating verbal conversations and written communications.
Learn District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
Work independently with little direction.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Work effectively in a multi-ethnic setting.
Review situations and determine an effective course of action.
Work confidentially with discretion.
Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Type at an acceptable rate of speed.
Plan and organize work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years experience working with needs and issues of disadvantaged persons.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license; incumbents are required to use personal vehicle and provide proof of insurance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT: Classroom and students' home environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment, hearing and speaking to exchange information, walking to enter homes of students, reaching to retrieve and maintain files, and vision to read and assure accuracy to records and reports.

*This position reports 8.0 hours/ day; 5 days/week; 190 work-day calendar
District offers coverage for health, vision and dental plans for 190-day, prorated to FTE. District contribution for health benefits shall be equal to the annual cost of Kaiser medical employee only, plus a monthly contribution of $300 towards either employee + one or Full Family.
