Job description

This is a year-round, part-time position. Evening and weekend availability is essential.
Troop Launch Coordinator (PT)
Department: Community Engagement
Classification: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Director of Community Engagement
Mission: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Purpose: The part-time Troop Launch Coordinator is responsible for extending Girl Scouting in new communities by facilitating temporary, four-week start-up troops with the goal of transitioning them into volunteer-led troops. Each troop would be held in communities across Iowa where girls are interested in Girl Scouts, but no leaders are in place. The Troop Launch Coordinator would host up to four temporary troops at a time before focusing their attention on the next community, identified in partnership with the Director of Community Engagement using data-drive decision making. As part of the Community Engagement team, this team member will also help recruit new youth and adult members at community events, particularly on nights and weekends.
Key components of this role are:
  • Implement an engaging Girl Scout troop experience that focuses on training and providing tools to parents/guardians to become leaders.
  • Build relationships with parents/guardians and other community partners who may become troop leaders.
  • Represent Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa (GSGI) at community events aimed at recruiting new members.
A day in the life... (Essential functions)
  • Lead starter troops while adhering to Girl Scout principles and safety guidelines.
  • Facilitate in-person troop meetings at various school or community facilities.
  • Customize troop plans to provide fun, interactive activities while engaging parents/guardians to take over the troops as co-leaders.
  • Correspond with parents/guardians using all forms of communication including email, phone calls, text, and other social media platforms to provide effective and timely troop member support.
  • Mobilize volunteer participation and support of troop functions and activities.
  • Represent GSGI and recruit youth and adult members at community events, particularly on nights and weekends.
  • Input leads gathered at community events for Community Engagement Manager to follow up.
  • Provide support to other Community Engagement initiatives.
  • Stay up to date on all program level requirements, volunteer training, and member communication.
  • Support council goals in membership and customer support as well as supporting overall council strategies, initiatives, and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum 1-year experience in customer service and/or volunteer recruitment (equivalent combination of education and transferable experiences acceptable).
  • Experience working with school-age youth is a plus!
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and proven problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation)
  • Proven excellent customer service orientation and interpersonal skills.
  • Competency working in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong computer skills with MS Office products.
  • Program design experience is a plus.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain.

  • Flexibility is key. The majority of this role is working evenings and weekends to deliver programming or attend community events.

  • Must maintain annual or lifetime membership in Girl Scouts at all times.
  • Must possess a valid driverโ€™s license and liability insurance.
  • Every three years, successful completion of a criminal background check and driving check.

  • Generally, climate-controlled conditions when onsite at the office, schools, or community centers
