Job description

Commonwealth Rolled Products is a leading manufacturer of Aluminum rolled products for the Automotive, Commercial, and Industrial markets. The Company operates its production facility in Lewisport, KY with the support of an Automotive Innovation Center for R&D, Sales and Field Service in Madison Heights (DET), and Inside Sales in the Cleveland, OH area.

Our production facility is seeking to add a Roll Shop Grinder - Mechanic to its team.ย The primary function is to construct, install, repair and maintain Roll Shop equipment and mill roll assemblies, and grind rolls.

Material Used Processed and Handled:ย  Components and assemblies for mill rolls, scratch brushes, strippers, and Roll Shop machinery, including motors, piping, fasteners, coolants, lubricants, grinding/lapping compounds, paints, cleaning materials and solvents, wood, concrete, plastics, paper, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, composition and synthetic materials, gaskets and packing.

Tools and Equipment Used:ย  Roll grinders, dynamic balancer, precision measuring equipment and instruments, gas and electric welding equipment, templates, gauges, power saws, drills, hammers, presses, grinders, jacks, lubricating equipment, hydraulic equipment and handling equipment (hoists, cranes, fork trucks, etc.) manual and power cleaning tools and hand tools common to the trade.

Direction Exercised: Helper as assigned.

Duties and Working Procedures:ย Operate cranes and other hoisting devices.

  • Disassemble roll assemblies, set up rolls in grinders, remove rolls in accordance with standard rigging and handling procedures, and reassemble roll assemblies as required.

  • Grind rolls in accordance with instructions, prints, wheel requirements, contour and surface specifications.ย  Calculate dimensions and tapers as required.

  • Braze, weld, cut, solder and metalize as required to effect repairs.

  • Maintain standard records related to mill roll maintenance.

  • Disassemble, clean, repair, replace as needed, all component parts related to mill roll assemblies, scratch brushes and strippers.

  • Troubleshoot and repair damage or malfunction of mill roll assemblies and shop machinery as required.ย  Inspect, test, adjust, balance and align equipment as required.ย 

  • Maintain tolerances and precision fits as specified by prints.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on mill roll assemblies and shop machinery as assigned.

  • Layout, fabricate and fit parts for mill roll assemblies and shop machinery as assigned.

  • Fabricate devices for mill roll assembly or component handling, testing or revision.

  • Braze, cut, weld, solder or metalize as required.

  • Notify appropriate personnel of irregularities in equipment or materials; maintain clean and orderly conditions in shop and work areas; observe all safety rules.

Required qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.ย 
  • At least three years of mechanical maintenance experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment and/or graduated from a mechanical program from a technical college required
  • Must meet or exceed the pre-placement assessment requirements
  • Ability to perform physical and labor intensive tasks
  • Flexibility in working hours including ability to work day, evening and night rotating shifts, daily overtime, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to adjust to the changing needs of a fast-paced manufacturing environment
