Primary Care Clinician (Part-Time)

Amae Health

San Mateo, CA • On-site

Part-time

Posted 17 days ago

Job description

Who We Are

Amae Health is a Series B, venture-backed Public Benefit Corporation that delivers specialty outpatient care for people living with severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar I disorder, and treatment-resistant depression. We design and operate high-acuity, in-person clinics across the United States.

Our model integrates psychiatry, therapy, primary care, dietitians, and community health workers under one roof to deliver coordinated, longitudinal care for a population that has historically been fragmented across systems.

Leading health systems collaborate with Amae to bring this model to their communities, including New York-Presbyterian, Cedars-Sinai, Mass General Brigham, Novant Health, and CommonSpirit Health.

Why We Are Different

  • Integrated care, not a referral network. Psychiatrists, therapists, primary care providers, dietitians, and community health workers work side-by-side and share responsibility for the same patients.
  • Practice at the top of your license. Manageable caseloads, meaningful clinical depth, and purpose-built tools designed for this population.
  • Continuous learning. Through our collaboration with Mass General Brigham, clinicians receive ongoing training, supervision, and mentorship in evidence-based SMI care.
  • Advancing the field. Our clinicians contribute to new outcomes frameworks and research shaping the future of severe mental illness care.
  • A model built for sustainability. Team-based care, thoughtful caseloads, and strong infrastructure make this work meaningful-and sustainable over time.

The Role

We are seeking a Primary Care Clinician (FNP, MD or DO) interested in a 1099 Contract opportunity at our San Mateo, California location as part of an interdisciplinary team committed to providing personalized, compassionate and high-quality SMI care. This position requires a commitment of 4-5 hours per week, on-site

In this role, you will provide holistic primary care services to Amae's patients with severe mental illness. This position will report directly to the Clinical Director and will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, therapists, peers, and a health coach, to ensure that our members receive the highest level of care possible. This primary care role is designed to integrate with and support the mental health treatment our members receive at Amae.

What You'll Work On:
  • Conduct thorough assessments, diagnose medical conditions, and manage acute and chronic illnesses while considering their impact on mental health
  • Prescribe and manage medications, ensuring safe and effective use, while considering potential interactions with psychiatric medications
  • Perform routine physical examinations and preventive health screenings, integrating the findings with mental health care plans
  • Educate members on health promotion, disease prevention, and management of chronic conditions, emphasizing the connection between physical and mental well-being
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date medical records and documentation that integrate with mental health care plans
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and attend regular team meetings to review and discuss patient care, fostering a collaborative environment
  • Uphold Amae Health's commitment to providing compassionate, holistic, and culturally sensitive care
  • Adhere to all relevant ethical, legal, and professional standards

What You'll Have:

  • NP Degree from an accredited school or a MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school is required
  • Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in California
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related primary care specialty
  • For NP PCP candidates, minimum of 5 years RN experience prior to PCP licensure and 1+ year experience as FNP after completion of clinical hours is preferred
  • Previous experience working independently as a PCP
  • Excellent clinical, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and embrace a whole-person care approach
  • Strong commitment to patient-centered care
  • Flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the organization and our members
  • Preferred experience in primary care for patients with severe mental illness
  • Preferred experience in whole-person, holistic, integrated care

What We're Building

As a clinician at Amae, you are not adjacent to this work. You are essential to it.

  • A national care delivery model for the highest-acuity patients in behavioral health.
  • Precision medicine for SMI. Individualized treatment informed by multimodal clinical, behavioral, and social data.
  • A clinical operating system that puts longitudinal data, real-time patient signals, and purpose-built tools into a single decision layer for care teams.
  • Frontier science and measurement: defining and validating the outcomes frameworks that this field has never had. Hospitalizations avoided, days stable, functional improvement, and more.
  • A collaboration model with the country's leading health systems that proves coordinated SMI care can work at scale.

Compensation & Benefits

Amae Health is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. Hourly compensation for this role will vary by on licensure.

  • PCP MD/DO Compensation range: $160-190/hr

  • NP/PA Compensation range: $100-$125/hr

If you want to practice at the top of your license, learn from the best in academic medicine, contribute to research that is defining a new field, and do it all inside a team that was actually built for this work, we'd like to talk.
