Job description

The Chief Financial Officer is an officer of several 501(C)3 nonprofit corporations; Vail Valley Foundation, Youth Power, Eagle River Valley Childcare, and Vilar Performing Arts Center. The CFO will provide leadership, strategic vision and ensure operational excellence for all accounting and finance functions.

In addition to serving as a key member of the VVF executive team, the Chief Financial Officer will lead and mentor a team of five accounting and finance professionals plus three IT professionals with three to four of these eight staff as direct reports.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the budget and forecast process across all departments.
  • Synthesize complex information, generate actionable financial and business insights, and clearly articulate the financial future of the VVF to all stakeholders.
  • Perform complex and varied analyses to enable sound decision-making around near-term and long-term business risks and opportunities, identifying key business insights through data analysis and delivering synthesized and impactful communications that enable better business decisions and improved enterprise value.
  • Responsible for the monthly and year-end forecasting and review process, analysis, revenue projections, general ledger, compliance adherence and reporting, policy implementation, capital and the VVFโ€™s capital campaign, debt management including lines of credit, and the annual audit.
  • Provide the financial reports, forecasts and balance sheet projections for the Board, Board Executive Committee, Board Finance and Investment Committee, and other relevant board committees. Attends all Board and Board Executive Committee meetings with the VVF President. Attends other appropriate board committee meetings to provide financial and forecast updates.
  • Oversee banking activities and access credentials. Guide and implement procurement strategies focused on maximizing cost savings while ensuring supplier reliability.
  • Actively manage consolidated cash flow to ensure appropriate sources of cash are available to meet ongoing needs.
  • Participate in key decision making as a member of the Executive Team.
  • Actively participate in any merger, affiliation, and or acquisition due diligence.
  • Analyze, identify, and recommend revenue and expense opportunities.
  • Manage accounting control systems and internal audits ensuring the accurate and timely production of accounting information and financial reports.
  • Monitor changes in legal, regulatory, and administrative environments and implement procedural changes as needed to maintain compliance while maximizing operational and financial results.
  • Manage tax-exempt bond compliance.
  • Manage/secure/oversee VVFโ€™s commercial and event insurance programs.
  • Work in collaboration with VVF President and Vice President, Human Resources Officer on all benefits, including annual health insurance to include medical, dental, vision, short- and long-term disability, HSA, FSA, 401(k) Plan, compensation, and other benefits.
  • Responsible for long-term financial strategic planning.
  • Responsible for VVFโ€™s leases, most legal needs of the VVF, risk management, bond compliance, and IRS compliance.
  • Guide the VVF IT department specific to network architecture, cyber-attack protection, server administration, software and database acquisitions, event IT needs, and desktop support.
  • The VVF mission is executed on a year-round basis. There will be times when work or additional responsibilities are required by the CFO in the evenings, on weekends, and over holidays.
  • In addition to the above, the CFO will assist the VVF President and members of the Executive Team to improve our organizational efficiency and effectiveness.
