Senior Commissioning Manager

Chicago, IL • On-site

Job description

The Opportunity

Shamrock Business Consulting is recruiting a Senior Commissioning Manager for a client building complex, mission-critical construction projects in the Greater Chicago Area. This is a direct-hire, permanent placement with a firm that puts commissioning at the center of project delivery — not as an afterthought at closeout.

You'll own the internal commissioning process from planning through final handover: mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and fire sprinkler systems. Full system functionality. Compliance with design and performance standards. Clean turnover. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with project teams, contractors, and consultants to plan, execute, and document every commissioning activity on the job.

What You'll Do

  • Run day-to-day site commissioning. Work with project managers, contractors, and discipline teams to resolve issues and keep execution coordinated.
  • Partner with the owner's Commissioning Provider to develop and execute commissioning plans for all MEP/FP systems — test requirements, inspections, factory start-up and acceptance testing, integrated system testing, and turnover documentation.
  • Review commissioning scripts, make technical recommendations, and keep everything aligned with design intent and performance objectives.
  • Participate directly in factory witness testing, functional performance tests, inspections, and field verification.
  • Keep documentation accurate and current: issue logs, meeting minutes, field reports, and final commissioning reports.
  • Oversee specialized system testing — NETA, SCADA, controls integration, and operational verification.
  • Lead owner training on commissioned systems. Explain how they run, what performance should look like, and where they can fail.
  • Travel to project sites within the Greater Chicago Area or as required.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering, Construction Management — or equivalent trade experience. We care about what you can do in the field.
  • 5–10 years in construction or engineering with a commissioning focus, ideally with a GC, MEP engineering firm, or consultancy. Data center experience is a strong plus.
  • Commissioning certification highly preferred: CxP, BCxP (ASHRAE), CxA (ACG), CCP (BCxA), or QCxP (University of Wisconsin). Actively pursuing one? Still apply.
  • Strong command of construction practices and commissioning phases L0–L6, with the ability to align deliverables to milestone requirements.
  • Ability to assess risk, schedule impact, and safety considerations tied to commissioning activities.
  • Proven experience integrating fire/life safety systems with MEP/FP systems.
  • QA/QC and test-and-balance experience to ensure system performance and commissioning readiness.
  • Thorough understanding of design codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, project management tools, and commissioning platforms such as BIM360 and CxAlloy.
  • Strong meeting facilitation — you document action items and close them out.
  • Clear communication, solid technical writing, disciplined time management, and the interpersonal skills to influence without friction.

Compensation

  • Base salary: $125,000–$175,000, depending on experience
  • Annual discretionary bonus
  • Full benefits package — details provided during the interview process
