What are Commission Video Game Testers?

Commission Video Game Testers are professionals who are paid on a per-project or per-task basis to test video games for bugs, glitches, and overall playability. Unlike full-time or salaried testers, commission testers often work as freelancers or contractors, getting paid based on the amount or type of work completed. Their main role is to ensure that games function as intended before they are released to the public. They provide feedback to developers on issues they encounter and may test different aspects of gameplay, graphics, and user experience. This position requires attention to detail, good communication skills, and a passion for gaming.

How do Commission Video Game Testers typically collaborate with development teams during a game’s testing phase?

Commission Video Game Testers work closely with game developers, designers, and quality assurance leads to identify and document bugs, glitches, and usability issues. Communication is often facilitated through detailed bug reports and regular feedback sessions, ensuring that issues are clearly understood and reproducible by the development team. Testers may participate in daily stand-up meetings or submit reports via tracking systems, which helps integrate their findings into the development workflow efficiently. This collaborative process is essential for maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring timely fixes before the game's release.

Can I get paid for testing video games?

Yes, commission-based video game testers are paid for their work, which involves playing and evaluating games to identify bugs and provide feedback. Payment can vary depending on the employer, project scope, and whether the role is freelance or full-time, often involving skills in gaming, reporting tools, and quality assurance processes.

How much do video game testers get paid?

Video game testers typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, with entry-level positions often paying around minimum wage and more experienced testers earning higher rates. Salaries can vary based on location, company, and experience, and some testers work part-time or on a contract basis while using testing tools and reporting bugs regularly.

How to get hired as a video game tester?

To get hired as a video game tester, you should have a strong understanding of gaming, good attention to detail, and basic knowledge of bug reporting. Many companies look for prior experience or familiarity with testing tools, and some roles require a high school diploma or equivalent. Building a portfolio of testing work or participating in beta tests can also improve your chances of employment.

The choice depends on preferred work structure and independence.

Are game testers in high demand?

Game testers, including commission-based video game testers, are in moderate demand as the gaming industry continues to grow, especially with the rise of new consoles and online gaming. However, the number of available positions is competitive, and many roles require attention to detail, knowledge of gaming platforms, and sometimes certification or experience in quality assurance. Job seekers should stay updated on industry trends and develop relevant skills to improve their prospects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commission Video Game Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commission Video Game Tester, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of gaming mechanics, with at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with bug tracking systems, various gaming platforms, and quality assurance (QA) tools is typically required. Job description

Join Our Founding Team: Design How AI Video Games are Created and Played!

We're an ambitious new game studio on a mission to revolutionize how games are made by creating an AI Game Generator that transforms players' lives into playable, personalized adventures. We envision a "game within a game," where the user enjoys building the game as much as they enjoy playing it. As our lead UI/UX Video Game Designer, you will craft the end-to-end experience that makes game creation immersive, intuitive, and fun. You will design how players work with the AI to guide the game's style and refine its components, all while giving players the freedom to unleash their creativity.

You can learn more about DreamForge and join our waitlist at https://www.playdreamforge.com

What You'll Do:

  • Design and iterate the end-to-end UI/UX flow for AI-assisted game creation
  • Determine how players will interact with "Forge", the character that helps them build their Dreams
  • Create a playful and engaging "game-within-a-game" experience, ensuring the creation process is as enjoyable as the game itself
  • Balance structure and freedom: guide users effectively through prompts so they don't feel stuck, without limiting their creative potential
  • Develop user flows and high-fidelity prototypes that can be implemented in Unity
  • Collaborate with engineers, AI specialists, and game designers to bring the experience to life
  • Conduct usability testing, synthesize feedback, and refine designs to optimize the player experience

What We're Looking For:

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating UI/UX work in video games
  • Practical experience collaborating with teams developing within Unity
  • Experience with both mobile and PC game design
  • Understanding of player psychology, engagement loops, and what makes design feel game-like
  • Excellent English communication skills and ability to articulate design choices clearly
  • Comfortable working in a remote, global team environment, both independently and collaboratively
  • Experience designing conversational or AI-driven interfaces is a plus

Benefits:

  • Equity ownership. Share in the upside of what we are building together
  • Competitive salary and a full-time position
  • Flexible location and fully-remote work environment
  • The opportunity to join a very early stage company and leave your mark on something truly unique
Employment Type: FULL_TIME
