ACADEMIC TUTOR
Number of Openings: 1

Position Status: Part-Time Temporary / *Not to exceed 29 hours/week

JOB SUMMARY
The Academic Tutor provides subject-specific support to individual students or small groups to enhance their understanding of course material. The tutor must be able to adapt instructional methods to meet the unique learning needs of each student.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring to support student learning.
  • Assist students with assignments and presentations.
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies to meet student needs.
  • Keep records of tutoring sessions and student progress.
  • Attend mandatory tutor orientation each semester.
  • Identify student academic needs and suggest strategies to improve learning.
  • Monitor students and maintain a safe, supportive environment.
  • Motivate and encourage students through positive feedback.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT
  • Perform tasks using personal computers and peripheral devices.
  • Operate and maintain (if applicable) office equipment such as photocopiers, printers, and scanners to support daily workflow.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Use Google Suite and Microsoft Office; Banner experience preferred.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Writing tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in Composition I and/or II. Be prepared to discuss at least two samples of writing that you have done in a college-level course. Have excellent essay writing and grammar skills.
  • Biology tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in General Biology, or Anatomy and Physiology I or II, or Microbiology (depending on tutoring subject). Expert and responsible use of microscopes and anatomy models.
  • Chemistry tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in General Chemistry, Introductory Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry (depending on tutoring subject). In the case of an embedded tutor, be available for hands-on lab assistance a couple of hours per week.
  • Computer Skills tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in any Information Technology course.

JOB STANDARDS/QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma.
    • Diploma in progress is permissible.
  • Must have earned a grade of A or B in the relevant course being tutored.
  • Must be a current college student (college or university)
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 4 hours per week.
  • Valid driver's license.

JOB LOCATION
This is an on-site position with the primary workplace in the Tutoring and Learning Center located in the Library Building at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee.
