Job description

Welcome to the Director of Patent Litigation role at AMD Law Department.

The Role

The AMD Law Department is seeking a Director of Patent Litigation to support and manage the company’s defensive patent litigation team. This role will report to the Sr. Director of Intellectual Property and focus on U.S. and international disputes, including district court litigation, ITC proceedings, and related actions.

The Director will lead the patent litigation team and work closely with other internal teams and outside counsel to assess risk, develop litigation strategies, and manage ongoing matters in alignment with AMD’s business objectives. This is a hands‑on role requiring strong judgement, collaboration, and the ability to manage multiple matters effectively.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and support defensive patent litigation matters in U.S. federal courts, the ITC, and foreign jurisdictions.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel on litigation strategy, discovery, motion practice, expert development, and trial preparation.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to gather facts, assess risk, and support responses to legal actions.
  • Lead preparation and review of infringement and invalidity claim charts with technical teams.
  • Support early case assessment and dispute resolution efforts while maintaining readiness for continued litigation.
  • Lead team analysis and response to patent assertion letters, NPE demands, and indemnity requests, developing robust invalidity and non‑infringement positions.
  • Coordinate internal technical reviews and partner with IP and engineering teams to support defense strategies.
  • Contribute to development of litigation processes, best practices, and internal readiness.
  • Participate in and sometimes lead settlement negotiations to resolve matters, where appropriate.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in semiconductor patent litigation, including managing or supporting cases in the Western District of Texas, Eastern District of Texas, Northern District of California, and the International Trade Commission.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, cross‑functional team environment.
  • Experience developing and leading a high-performing team.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Experience at both a top law firm and a high-tech company.
Academic Credentials
  • JD degree and admission to practice law in a U.S. state.
  • Technical degree preferred (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field).
