Commission F1 Visa information

How to earn money on a F1 visa?

F1 visa holders can earn money through on-campus employment, which is typically limited to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work requires authorization such as Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which are granted under specific conditions and often require approval from the designated school official and USCIS. Adhering to visa regulations is essential to maintain legal status while working in the U.S.

What is the 5 month rule for F-1 students?

The 5 month rule for F-1 students refers to the requirement that students must be enrolled full-time for at least five months before they are eligible to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). This rule ensures students have maintained their student status before engaging in employment related to their field of study.

Can you do freelance work on a F1 visa?

F1 visa holders are generally not permitted to engage in freelance work or any employment outside of authorized on-campus jobs or practical training programs like OPT or CPT. Working freelance without proper authorization can violate visa regulations and lead to visa status issues or deportation. It is important to consult with a designated school official or immigration attorney before pursuing any work opportunities.

What jobs can I have under a F1 visa?

F1 visa holders can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during breaks. Off-campus employment is limited to Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which require authorization from the school and USCIS. These work options typically involve jobs related to the student's field of study and may require specific permissions or certifications.

The Commission F1 Visa is a student visa allowing international students to study in the U.S. with limited work options, mainly on-campus or authorized practical training. A Sales Associate is a retail or sales worker, often employed in retail stores or customer service roles. While both involve customer interaction, the F1 visa is primarily for students, whereas a Sales Associate role is a typical employment position. Understanding these differences helps international students navigate work options during their studies.
