Description

Texas Biomed is seeking an HVAC & Environmental Building Controls Technician who prefers a more favorable work/life balance, predominantly day shift only, the opportunity for a 4-10 workweek, a more consistent daily work schedule, and report to the same work site every day.  The HVAC & Environment Building Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, operation, programming, troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of building automation and HVAC control systems throughout the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) campus. This position supports reliable and efficient operation of critical research, laboratory, animal care, office, and support facilities by maintaining sophisticated HVAC control systems and associated equipment.

The technician will work closely with Facilities Operations, HVAC technicians, electricians, engineers, contractors, and other campus personnel to ensure building environmental conditions, equipment performance, energy efficiency, operational reliability meet Texas Biomed standards and applicable regulatory requirements.


Will be required to satisfactorily complete an SRA Federal background check.


The Role:

Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain building automation systems (BAS), building management systems (BMS), and HVAC control systems.

Diagnose and repair control system issues involving HVAC equipment, sensors, actuators, valves, dampers, controllers, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and related components.

Program, configure, modify, and commission digital control systems, including sequences of operation, setpoints, schedules, alarms, trends, and control logic.

Monitor HVAC system performance through graphical user interfaces, control dashboards, alarms, and trend data.

Investigate temperature, humidity, pressure, airflow, ventilation, and other environmental control issues and make appropriate system adjustments.

Maintain accurate documentation of control system configurations, programming changes, equipment points, wiring, and sequences of operation.

Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on building automation and HVAC control systems.

Calibrate, test, and replace sensors, transmitters, actuators, thermostats, and other control devices.

Troubleshoot communication networks and protocols used by building automation systems, including BACnet, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and related technologies.

Assist with the integration of new HVAC equipment and control systems into existing BAS infrastructure.

Review control drawings, wiring diagrams, sequences of operation, equipment submittals, and technical documentation.

Support installation, startup, commissioning, and functional testing of HVAC control systems and equipment.

Coordinate with outside controls contractors and service providers and verify work is completed according to specifications.

Respond to BAS alarms, HVAC control failures, and environmental conditions that may affect research, laboratory, animal care, or facility operations.

Assist in maintaining appropriate environmental conditions in critical and specialized areas.

Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, energy efficiency, equipment performance, and occupant comfort.

Maintain compliance with applicable safety requirements, institutional policies, and regulatory standards.

Participate in an on-call or emergency response rotation as required.

Perform other duties as assigned by Facilities Management leadership.


Our Ideal Candidate: 

High school diploma or GED

Four (4) years of experience programming, commissioning, running system diagnostics, and/or repairing building automation (BAS) / building management (BMS) systems

Experience writing computer programs and software applications related to HVAC

Strong electrical background with the ability to run conduit/wiring and make terminations preferred

Must be able to obtain Security Risk Assessment (SRA) clearance and remain SRA eligible for duration of employment to access labs and lab integrity control equipment

Knowledge and skills to properly calibrate panels as well as field-level devices and end device calibration (i.e. Setras, Room Pressure Monitors, etc.)

Must have knowledge and experience to write computer programs and software applications related to the HVAC industry 

Must be able to support a rotational "on-call" process, which could include nights and weekends
