Job description

D&M Owens Inc. is seeking an experienced Paver Screed Operator to join our Paving Division. This position is responsible for operating and adjusting the screed unit on asphalt paving equipment to achieve proper mat thickness, grade, and surface quality on roadway, parking lot, and commercial paving projects. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail, understands paving operations, can work efficiently while following project specifications and direction, and contributes to a safe, productive, and high-performing crew. Due to the nature of this position and the need for daily travel to multiple local job sites, we are seeking candidates who currently reside within a 30-minute commute of our service area. This position does not include relocation assistance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the screed on an asphalt paver, adjusting controls to maintain proper mat thickness, width, crown, and slope per project specifications.
  • Monitor and adjust screed temperature, vibration, and tamper settings for optimal asphalt compaction and finish.
  • Communicate with the paver operator and ground crew to control paving speed and material flow.
  • Check grade stakes, string lines, or automated grade control systems (ski, sonic, or GPS/laser) and make real-time adjustments.
  • Inspect mat quality behind the screed for texture, segregation, tears, or other defects, and correct issues promptly.
  • Perform pre- and post-shift inspections, greasing, and minor maintenance on the screed and extensions.
  • Adjust screed extensions/end gates for varying paving widths.
  • Follow all site safety protocols, including traffic control and PPE requirements.
  • Collaborate with the crew foreman on daily job planning and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience operating a paver screed or related heavy equipment in asphalt paving.
  • Working knowledge of asphalt mix properties, grade control systems, and paving best practices.
  • Ability to read grade stakes, plans, and slope/crown specifications.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver's license; CDL a plus.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on a physically demanding job site.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification a plus.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working near heavy machinery and in high-heat conditions.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor construction sites with varying terrain and weather conditions.
  • Small, specialized crews relying on teamwork and communication.
  • Fast-paced environment with day-to-day task changes based on project needs.

Schedule & Pay

  • Full-time, Monday–Friday (occasional Saturdays based on job progress).
