Paver Job Responsibilities


Operates the asphalt paver and works with the Asphalt Foreman in determining the pattern and sequence of the paving operations. Manages and instructs asphalt crew throughout the paving process. Directs delivery trucks, and ensures asphalt paver is properly maintained.


Skills and Qualifications:


Education/Experience


  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • Advanced experience with asphalt paving and operation of a paver.
  • Minimum of 5 years paving experience in all aspects of asphalt paving.
  • Minimum of 2 years of paver operating experience.


Licensing/Registrations


Required: Driver's license in good standing.


Preferred: CDL Driver's License


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Ability to comprehend, retain, and communicate complex plans.
  • Thorough understanding of preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving.
  • Verifiable leadership qualities.
  • Ability to operate asphalt paver to spread, smooth, level asphalt on road beds.
  • Ability to operate distributors, loaders, skid-steers, rollers, lutes.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment MVR, background and drug screen.
  • Knowledge of all materials, equipment, methods and techniques used in road construction.
  • Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary.

  • Ability to learn quickly and use critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to lift/carry on a regular basis at least 50-90lbs personally.
  • Ability to use hands and feet to depress and move pedals and levers.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple activities on the job site including equipment, employees, and other traffic.
  • Constant physical effort including sitting, standing and walking for at least eight hours per day.
  • Working outside for extended periods of time in different weather conditions.


Job Duties


  • Operation of asphalt paver, roller, skid-steer, milling machine, and other equipment.
  • Directs the trucks delivering asphalt to the paver.
  • Observe the distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow, and indicate low spots for workers to add material.
  • Jobsite pre-inspection, management, and post-inspection.
  • Ensure safety of crew, and the public.
  • Maintain a positive attitude, reliable attendance, and meet company standards.
