Schmalz Custom Landscaping & Garden Center, Inc. is a full-service design-build landscaping company serving Northeast Wisconsin since 1949. We have also recently expanded into Southeast Wisconsin, including Milwaukee and the surrounding areas. We specialize in creating high-quality custom outdoor spaces, including landscape design, installation, lawn care, pools, and a full garden center. We take pride in delivering beautiful, functional results and exceptional client experiences.

Job Summary

We are looking for a skilled Landscape Designer & Estimator to create attractive, functional landscape designs while preparing accurate cost estimates and bids. This hybrid role combines creative design with strong analytical and estimating skills for residential and commercial projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop conceptual and detailed landscape designs, including planting plans, hardscapes, irrigation, and lighting.
  • Conduct site assessments and client consultations to understand needs and constraints.
  • Prepare accurate material take-offs, labor estimates, and competitive bid proposals.
  • Solicit pricing from suppliers and subcontractors; maintain current cost databases.
  • Collaborate with clients, sales, and installation teams to refine designs and ensure projects stay on budget.
  • Support project handoff and track costs throughout construction.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in landscape design and/or estimating.
  • Proficient in design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc.) and estimating tools.
  • Strong knowledge of plants, materials, construction methods, and local codes.
  • Excellent attention to detail, communication, math, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean record and ability to travel.
Preferred
  • Experience with design-build projects.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to make accurate, timely decisions daily.
  • Excellent communication skills and a high level of professionalism.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods (4+ hours).
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. or more.
