What is the difference between Combustion Engine Development vs Internal Combustion Engine Design?

AspectCombustion Engine DevelopmentInternal Combustion Engine Design
CredentialsMechanical Engineering degree, certifications in engine testingMechanical Engineering degree, certifications in CAD and engine analysis
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, testing facilities, manufacturing plantsDesign studios, CAD labs, prototype workshops
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, power generationAutomotive, small engine manufacturing, research institutions

Combustion Engine Development focuses on the entire process of creating and testing engines, including prototyping and performance evaluation. Internal Combustion Engine Design primarily involves designing engine components and systems using CAD tools. While both roles require mechanical engineering expertise, development emphasizes testing and validation, whereas design centers on creating efficient engine layouts.

What is combustion engine development?

Combustion engine development refers to the process of designing, testing, and improving internal combustion engines, which are commonly used in vehicles, machinery, and power generation. This field involves optimizing engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions by working on components such as pistons, cylinders, fuel systems, and exhaust systems. Engineers in this area use advanced simulation tools, prototype testing, and data analysis to ensure engines meet regulatory and performance standards. The work also includes adapting engines to new fuels and integrating advanced technologies to reduce environmental impact.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in Combustion Engine Development, and how are they addressed within the team?

Professionals in Combustion Engine Development often encounter challenges such as meeting strict emissions regulations, optimizing fuel efficiency, and integrating new technologies. These challenges are typically addressed through close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including design engineers, software specialists, and testing personnel. Regular team meetings, data-driven problem solving, and iterative prototyping help ensure innovative solutions and compliance with industry standards. Additionally, professionals are encouraged to stay current with evolving technologies and regulatory requirements to remain competitive in this dynamic field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Combustion Engine Development, and why are they important?

Success in Combustion Engine Development requires a strong background in mechanical or automotive engineering, thermodynamics, and internal combustion theory, typically backed by a relevant degree. Proficiency with CAD software, engine simulation tools, and emissions testing systems is commonly expected, along with experience in industry-standard certifications like Six Sigma or ISO standards. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for innovating efficient engines, meeting regulatory standards, and ensuring reliable performance in a highly technical and collaborative environment.

Job description

Senior Engineer - Performance & Calibration
This role is fully onsite in Bloomfield, CT, five days per week, and the company will be relocating to Suffield, CT later in 2026.
About LiquidPiston:
LiquidPiston is redefining the internal combustion engine through its innovative rotary X-engine architecture. Our mission is to deliver compact, fuel-efficient, high power-density engines for a wide range of applications. We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Engineer โ€“ Performance & Calibration to help bring our advanced rotary engines to production.
Position Summary:
As Senior Engineer โ€“ Performance & Calibration you will be a key contributor to engine performance development activities aimed at bringing LiquidPistonโ€™s rotary engines to production. You will work closely within a team of Test Engineers, Technicians, and Performance Engineers as you develop engine calibration strategies and methodologies to meet performance targets. In addition, you will collaborate with Chief Engineers, Design Engineers, and other cross-functional team members to help define critical data and insights needed to inform engine architecture and design decisions.
A broad range of experience and skills, along with the ability to adapt quickly from one task to another, will be essential for success. This role places strong emphasis on engine calibration supported by deep knowledge of engine performance, efficiency, testing, and data analysis. The position requires a solid foundation in thermal sciences and engineering principles, and the ability to work collaboratively with analysts using tools such as GT Power and combustion CFD platforms. You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of simulation and development work.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform engine calibration to meet targets for power, efficiency, emissions, transient response, and off-nominal operating conditions.
  • Develop efficient processes and methods for engine calibration tailored to the rotary X-engine platform.
  • Document and communicate results of calibration efforts clearly and effectively.
  • Design and execute engine test plans for performance development, including analysis and reporting of results.
  • Collaborate with analysts running GT Power, combustion CFD, or other simulation tools to support holistic, model-based development approaches.
  • Work closely with cross-functional design and test teams to drive engine improvements and support design decisions.
  • Develop and follow standardized test and calibration procedures specific to LiquidPistonโ€™s engine architecture.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts that enhance testing efficiency, simulation accuracy, and overall development effectiveness.
  • Stay current with emerging engine technologies, calibration strategies, and simulation tools through self-directed learning and formal training.
Requirements:
  • PhD or MS in Mechanical Engineering (BS with significant relevant experience will also be considered).
  • Strong grasp of thermodynamics, physics, combustion, and engine efficiency principles.
  • Demonstrated engine testing and calibration experience.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, CAN communication tools, Python, or other scripting languages.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong team player with the ability to be self-directed in a fast-paced development environment.
