Work EnvironmentWorks in corporate, manufacturing, or design settings overseeing color standardsWorks in marketing, retail, or production environments coordinating color applications
Industry UsageUsed across industries like fashion, manufacturing, and brandingCommon in retail, advertising, and product development

While both roles focus on color accuracy and consistency, the Color Manager typically oversees overall color standards and strategies within an organization, whereas the Color Coordinator handles the implementation and coordination of color applications in specific projects or products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Color Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Color Manager, you need a deep understanding of color theory, color standards, and quality control, often backed by a degree in graphic design, chemistry, or a related field. Proficiency with color management software, spectrophotometers, and industry-standard color calibration tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for collaborating with production teams and clients. These skills ensure color consistency, product quality, and customer satisfaction across various media and manufacturing processes.

What does a Color Manager do?

A Color Manager is responsible for overseeing the color consistency and accuracy throughout the production process in industries such as textiles, printing, fashion, and manufacturing. They work closely with designers, manufacturers, and quality control teams to ensure that colors match specifications from concept to finished product. Their duties include developing color standards, managing color approvals, troubleshooting color issues, and using specialized software and equipment to measure and control color quality. By maintaining color integrity, Color Managers help brands achieve their intended visual identity and meet customer expectations.

How does a Color Manager typically collaborate with product development and manufacturing teams?

A Color Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between design vision and production feasibility. They work closely with product development teams to ensure color specifications align with branding and design intent, while also partnering with manufacturing to address technical limitations and ensure color consistency across materials and batches. Regular communication, color sampling, and approvals are part of the workflow to minimize discrepancies and maintain quality standards. This collaborative approach is essential for achieving the desired aesthetic and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Job description

About Rumpl

Rumpl makes comfort perform, redefining how people relax outdoors, at home, and everywhere in between. We invented the modern outdoor blanket and continue to lead the category through technical innovation, bold design, and storytelling that sparks connection.

Weโ€™re builders at heart. We move fast, test often, and care deeply about the details behind every product we make, from the materials and construction to the colors, prints, and finishes that make Rumpl unmistakably Rumpl.

About the Role

Rumpl is looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented Product Development Coordinator, Color & Print to support the execution of seasonal and in-line product development.

This is an entry-level, hands-on role for someone with a strong eye for color, print, and visual detail who is excited to learn how consumer products move from concept to production. Youโ€™ll work closely with Product, Creative, and external vendor partners to keep color and print workflows accurate, organized, and moving forward on time.

Youโ€™ll help bring Rumplโ€™s color and print stories to life through CADs, renders, lab dips, strike-offs, and clean development documentation. Youโ€™ll also support broader product-development work by helping ensure samples, supporting assets, and product details are ready before bulk production.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Graphic Pre-Production, Print Development, and GTM Asset Creation

  • Develop seasonal colorway CADs for carryover franchises in Adobe Illustrator
  • Create photorealistic renders in Adobe Photoshop for all colorways
  • Coordinate strike-off requests with suppliers and review submissions for color accuracy, registration, scale, and resolution
  • Compile and communicate consolidated feedback to vendors
  • Track and provide visibility into print development progress and revisions through final approval

Color Development

  • Maintain the seasonal color tracker, including Pantone codes, franchise allocation, and colorways
  • Request, track, and manage lab dips with suppliers, comparing results against Pantone standards
  • Consolidate feedback and communicate revisions to vendors
  • Organize and maintain physical color standards and approved swatches
  • Translate color direction into digital (ASE files, CADs) and physical tools (swatch boards)

Documentation, Archive, and Systems Accuracy

  • Maintain accurate color and print data across PLM/PIM systems and shared drives
  • Log and organize approved lab dips and strike-offs
  • Ensure consistent naming conventions and version control, digital and physical
  • Cross-check tech packs for color and print accuracy
  • Maintain seasonal and historical archives of color and print assets

Cross-functional Communication and Coordination

  • Send clear, consolidated color and print feedback to vendors
  • Maintain organized communication threads by season and product franchise
  • Provide regular updates on development status to internal teams
  • Flag artwork concerns, risks, and timeline impacts early, with proposed solutions
  • Partner with Marketing to ensure designs, color, and print align with brand voice, audience, and positioning

Product Development Support

  • Assist with the preparation of product supporting assets, including packaging, labeling, and UPCs
  • Review proto, SMS, and pre-production samples for alignment to approved specs and intent
  • Identify and flag discrepancies across materials, construction, color, and execution
  • Support final readiness checks prior to bulk production

What Youโ€™ll Bring

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in design, product development, soft goods technical development, or a related field; equivalent experience will also be considered
  • Internship, coursework, freelance, or early-career experience supporting product development, design, or consumer products preferred
  • A sense of aesthetics and color/print trends, paired with an analytical understanding of what drives broad commercial appeal in consumer products.
  • High proficiency in Adobe Illustrator required
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop required
  • Familiarity with Pantone standards and color-management workflows preferred
  • Exposure to apparel, soft goods, outdoor, or consumer-product development is a plus
  • Understanding of textile construction, print methods, or color application is a plus
  • Experience with PLM systems, OnBrand, or similar platforms is helpful but not required
  • Comfort working in Google Sheets or Excel

How Youย  Work

  • You notice the small things: a mislabeled file, off-color lab dip, or print that is slightly out of scale does not slip past you
  • You are organized by nature and enjoy creating systems that make work easier for everyone
  • You can manage multiple detailed workstreams and deadlines at once
  • You communicate clearly and turn feedback into concise, actionable next steps
  • You are curious, resourceful, and willing to ask questions until you understand the full picture
  • You take ownership of your work and follow through
  • You are excited to build practical expertise in color, print, and product development over time

What This Role Is, and Isnโ€™t

This Is

  • A hands-on, early-career role with meaningful exposure to the full product-development process
  • A strong opportunity to build technical skills in product development, color, print, sample review, and production readiness
  • A detail-heavy role for someone who enjoys both visual creativity and operational execution
  • A collaborative role working closely with Product, Creative, and supplier partners

This Is Not

  • A product strategy or seasonal line-planning role
  • The owner of final design vision, print direction, or color strategy
  • A purely creative role without execution, systems, and documentation responsibilities
  • A role expected to independently resolve complex development tradeoffs without support

Work Setup

This is a hybrid position based in Portland, OR, with required in-office days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. While not mandatory, the Product team has generally established a five-day in-office culture, so candidates who thrive in a highly collaborative, in-person environment tend to be the best fit.

Why You? Why Rumpl?

This is a chance to get close to the product, learn from experienced partners, and build a strong foundation in color, print, and product development at a creative and expressive consumer brand.

Rumpl offers:

  • Paid Time Off
  • Paid Holidays
  • Product discounts
  • Monthly health insurance allowance
  • 401(k) with company match, vested Day 1
  • Hybrid flexibility
  • A creative, values-based culture focused on balancing growth and sustainability
