Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary:
The Student Office & Social Media Assistant will support the department's outreach and engagement efforts by managing its social media presence, primarily on Instagram. This role involves attending departmental events to capture content, creating and scheduling daily posts and stories, and assisting with general office tasks. The ideal candidate is creative, organized, and enthusiastic about digital communication and growing the department's social media presence.
Requirements:
  • Social Media Content Creation & Management
    • Develop and post engaging daily content (posts, stories, reels) on Instagram.
    • Maintain a consistent visual and editorial style aligned with the department's branding.
    • Monitor engagement and respond to comments/messages as appropriate.
  • Event Coverage
    • Attend departmental events (e.g., lectures, student gatherings, workshops) to take photos and short videos.
    • Edit and upload event content in a timely manner.
  • Newsletter Assistance
    • Organize and maintain a list of events, faculty highlights, current student spotlight, and alumni news for the GIS Gazette
  • Planning & Strategy
    • Collaborate with staff, faculty, and Assistant Chair for Critical Languages to plan content around academic calendars, events, and announcements.
    • Maintain a content calendar to ensure regular and strategic posting.
  • Office Support
    • Assist with basic administrative tasks such as room booking, data entry, flyer distribution, office maintenance assistance.
Qualifications:
  • Strong familiarity with Instagram and basic photo/video editing tools (e.g., Canva, CapCut, iMovie, etc.).
  • Excellent written communication and visual storytelling skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Availability to attend occasional evening or weekend events.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with social media analytics and engagement strategies.
  • Photography or videography experience.
  • Interest in academic or student life communications.

Additional Information:
We are looking for someone who can take our social media with charge and enthusiasm. Initiative is key in this role as there are many moving parts, and it will require the student to be cognizant, think critically, and act with purpose.
Physical Demands Summary:
Student will be at desk in the Global Interdisciplinary Studies office and/or at GIS and Program events.
