Job description

Position: Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach & Head Coach for JV Men’s Basketball

Status: Part Time/Seasonal

Department: Athletics

Report to: Head Men’s Basketball Coach

PT Salary: $12,000/year

The College:

Paul Smith’s College is a small, private baccalaureate and associate degree granting institution located on a 170-acre campus adjacent to Lower St. Regis Lake in the 6 million acre Adirondack Park of northern New York State. The College is committed to providing all students with an outstanding undergraduate experience through engaged teaching, experiential learning, and personal attention. Paul Smith’s College seeks student athletes who will represent the college and their sport well, and who are as motivated to succeed in the classroom as they are in competition.

Position Description:

Reporting to the Head Men’s Basketball Coach, the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach & Head Coach for JV Men’s Basketball provides leadership in developing an effective basketball program. The assistant coach will work with the Head Coach to help facilitate effective practice sessions for the varsity program while developing workouts, practice sessions, team bonding activities, logistics, schedules, and other necessities for the junior varsity program. In addition, the position assists with recruiting student-athletes for the two teams and provides skills development opportunities for the program’s players. Close cooperation with the Office of Admissions is expected as is adherence to policies and procedures set forth by the USCAA, NCAA regulations, and the YSCC.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Represents the department at campus and community events.

  • Assists with the Department’s strategic initiatives and special projects.

  • Helps promote College athletics and facilities throughout the community.

  • Coordinates setup and take down at home athletic contests (game day management) as needed.

  • Works effectively with officials, the athletic trainer, and visiting team coaches.

  • Trains and schedules student workers as needed.

  • Assures a safe and enjoyable experience for visiting teams and spectators.

  • Serves as a role model for student athletes.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters in Sports Management or related field preferred.

  • One year as a high school, AAU or college basketball coach; comparable experience may be considered.

  • Proven ability to recruit student athletes.

  • Experience in the field of media relations or public information using traditional as well as digital media.

  • Knowledgeable in compiling statistics and statistical reports; professional experience specific to sports information preferred.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal and technology skills.

  • Effective both as a leader and as a collaborator.

  • Record of teaching and modeling character, values, and responsibility.

  • Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.

  • Flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends and travel as required.

  • Possess or is willing to complete CPR and First Aid certification;

  • Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to our insurance carrier.
