JOB TITLE: Library Media Specialist

OBJECTIVE: To develop, plan, and implement procedures for identification, evaluation, acquisition, production, organization and coordination of the school's library/media resources and facility. To maintain a learning environment that creates opportunities where all students can experience success. To teach subject-specific instructional strategies to enhance student content knowledge. To instruct and assist students and staff in the use of library resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Works with students to develop lifelong learning skills and understandings that will serve as connections to new learning. • Promotes and maintains a positive learning environment. • Maintains written plans, policies, procedures, and information on activities and services and copies are available for all stakeholders. • Maintains the resources of the library media center collections by purchasing, classifying and weeding when necessary. • Planning and management of the library budget, collection of overdue fees and lost books, and special projects involving library promotion and outreach activities such as book fairs. • Issues and receives materials for circulation or for use in library; • Responds to teacher requests for special reference subjects • Coordinates library assignments with classroom teachers to extend and enhance student learning. • Explains, demonstrates and assists in the use of reference sources, such as search engines, online catalogs and databases. • Able to utilize technology and software programs for circulation, email, presentations and spreadsheets. • All other duties as assigned.
KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Develop fun educational programs to encourage students to read • Experience in library and collection management • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal skills • Understanding of library classification systems • Understand budgets and financial needs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Supervises library assistants
PUBLIC RELATIONS: Build beneficial and supportive relationships with the community served by each school as well as with students, parents, and other district employees.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and or ability required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules and guidelines, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively one-on-one (or a small group) to students, parents, community groups, or other employees of the district.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. The ability to use a cash register and to cash out nightly and balance with the register and credit card machine.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Hold a valid teaching license with a library certification
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The ability to operate a computer utilizing software provided by the district.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Manual Dexterity: The ability to move hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers. Able to lift 25lbs. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
