Job description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a PROGRAM MANAGER I (COLLECTIONS AND GALLERY MANAGER) to be responsible for administratively managing a University department under the general direction of a functional Program Director or under the auspices of a Program Advising Committee and according to an established program plan. May participate in the development of program objectives and is responsible for achieving objectives within defined parameters set by University and/or department policies and procedures or technical principles. May require fiscal management of grants and other funds. May manage multiple programs. Requires the use of independent judgment to determine the best approach to accomplish objectives established in the program plan. May supervise staff as needed.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintains bookstacks for the RFHL, including shifting, shelving books arranged in National Library of Medicine call number order, pulling books for researchers and classes, dusting rare books, and cleaning shelves Processes collections in the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library (RFHL), including donations and acquisitions; develops bibliographic lists of donations; and helps maintain donor files, accession records and provenance information Works with the Curator to monitor environmental conditions and mitigate contaminants to protect the physical condition of the collections Under the supervision of the Curator, implements conservation appropriate repairs to damaged books; rehouses fragile materials in boxes and protective enclosures to ensure long-term preservation Supervises researchers in the Reynolds-Finley Reading Room Performs duplication services of rare materials for interlibrary loan, patron requests, and publications Assists the Curator of RFHL with class instructional sessions and group tours Assists the Curator in the development and installation of exhibits and displays, both physical and online Works as part of the Historical Collections team to develop exhibitions for the Dennis G. Pappas Historical Collections Gallery, including assisting with materials selection, writing and editing text panels and captions, preparing items for exhibition, installation/deinstallation, etc. Contributes to furthering knowledge of the RFHL collection within subject expertise Coordinates collection access for the Cataloging and Digital Services departments Assists in training and supervising interns, student workers, and volunteers Other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to: -Contributes to departmental social media and marketing efforts -Participates in Historical Collections events and outreach activities -Monitors supplies and coordinates orders as needed -Identifies professional development opportunities relevant to the position.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in English, History, or a related field Preferred: Master's degree in English, History, or a related field Experience: 1 year of experience working in a historical collections library
Required Skills:
  • Knowledge of the proper care and handling of rare books
