What does a collaborating physician do?

A collaborating physician reviews and supervises the work of healthcare providers such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants to ensure quality patient care. They provide guidance, approve treatment plans, and may be involved in case consultations, often working in team-based healthcare settings and requiring relevant medical licensure. Their role helps maintain compliance with state and federal regulations.

What is a collaborating physician?

A Collaborating Physician is a licensed medical doctor who partners with nurse practitioners (NPs) or physician assistants (PAs) to provide oversight, guidance, and support as required by state laws. This collaboration helps ensure high standards of patient care, often involving chart reviews, consultations, and co-signing certain medical documents. The specific duties and degree of involvement can vary depending on state regulations and the clinical setting. Collaborating Physicians play a key role in expanding access to healthcare by enabling NPs and PAs to practice more independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a collaborating physician?

To thrive as a Collaborating Physician, you need a valid medical license, board certification, and a thorough knowledge of clinical practice within your specialty. Experience with electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine platforms, and familiarity with regulatory requirements for supervision and collaboration are also essential. Strong communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help foster effective partnerships with nurse practitioners or physician assistants. These competencies ensure safe, compliant, and high-quality patient care while supporting advanced practice providers in delivering optimal services.

What is the difference between Collaborating Physician vs Medical Director?

Both roles require medical credentials, but their responsibilities and focus differ significantly.

How much do collaborating physicians make?

Collaborating physicians typically earn between $150,000 and $250,000 annually, depending on their specialty, experience, location, and work setting. They often work in outpatient clinics, hospitals, or private practices and may need specific certifications or licenses to collaborate with other healthcare providers.

How to become a collaborating physician?

To become a collaborating physician, one must typically hold an active medical license, have relevant experience in the specialty, and often complete specific state or federal requirements such as credentialing and signing off on prescriptions or treatment plans. The process may also involve establishing a formal agreement with a healthcare facility or pharmacy and maintaining ongoing licensure and continuing education. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and practice setting.

What are some common challenges faced by collaborating physicians when overseeing multiple nurse practitioners or physician assistants?

One common challenge for Collaborating Physicians is effectively managing communication and clinical oversight across several advanced practice providers, often working at different sites or on varying schedules. Ensuring protocol compliance, maintaining up-to-date documentation, and being accessible for consults can require careful time management and strong organizational skills. Additionally, Collaborating Physicians must stay informed about evolving state regulations regarding scope of practice to ensure both patient safety and legal compliance. Building a trusting, open relationship with each provider helps facilitate smoother collaboration and better patient outcomes.

Job description

Looking for a flexible role, to set your own schedule, and the chance to earn more as a collaborating physician?

Physician collabs earn a monthly stipend based on the number of Signify Health-contracted nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants they oversee.

You must be licensed in and living in Georgia in order to qualify.

Interested in in-home visits as well?

Our clinicians provide personalized In-Home Health Evaluations to health plan members. These visits include a medication and medical history review, as well as a physical evaluation performed in a health plan member’s home. You will be provided a pre-populated, patient-specific form for each evaluation and do not prescribe medicine, order lab tests, or alter people’s current treatment regimen.

  • Flexible schedule based on your preferences and availability
  • Additional compensation opportunities via our pay-per-test model (for visits where the health plan member qualifies to receive additional diagnostic and preventive tests)
  • Malpractice coverage during Signify Health-related assignments

Making a Difference - what physicians say about working with Signify Health

  • “Many of the people I see are shocked a physician is coming to their home to visit with them one-on-one. When you sit down and have an unhurried conversation about their health, they are impressed, happy, and understand that their health plan and care team cares about them.” - Marcie L., M.D., Arizona
  • “The primary care physician gets a snapshot of a person in an office setting, but with Signify Health, we see things like the number of steps to enter their home, the state of disrepair those steps may be in, and the person’s ability to function comfortably and with ease in their own home. We can make referrals to the individual’s health plan, encourage the participation of their loved ones, and ensure their PCPs are aware of their health and overall quality of life.” - Cathy H., M.D., Kentucky
