Job description

Overview
Who We Are:
Our team is comprised of electrical engineers who specify, design, develop, integrate, and test electronic instrumentation and control (I&C) systems. We're looking for driven high-performers who consistently focus on achieving results, demonstrate extreme ownership, thrive in a highly collaborative environment, take pride in building and strengthening their team, exemplify our core values, and seek to be part of something special that is more than just the means to a paycheck: a mission and vision that is bigger than themselves and their immediate team.
What We Do:
Our team performs systems engineering and integration with a focus on the electrical engineering discipline. Collaborating within our department as well as with other departments and engineering disciplines, system engineers will participate in the development, integration, and maintenance of shipboard equipment for a variety of electrical I&C systems. We will be leveraging model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools to supplement our systems engineering practices throughout the system's lifecycle. Our systems are developed by specifying and integrating subcomponents at the circuit card level (i.e., we specify which circuit cards to use, but we do not develop the cards or the software). In summary, our team generates system and hardware specifications based on concepts that we develop, supports other teams who design and develop the system hardware and software using our specifications, and supports integration and test of the hardware and software in our lab, test facilities, and the ship.
The engineer in this role will practice both electrical and systems engineering, working closely with interfacing system teams, hardware procurement teams, software development teams, and the customer. Related responsibilities include research, project management, risk management, developing written deliverables, preparing presentations, and participating in customer program reviews. This position requires an extensive amount of written and verbal collaboration and technical rigor.
Systems engineers on our team typically perform the following types of work:
  • Developing and maintaining cost and schedule estimates
  • Preparing written deliverables including technical recommendations to the customer
  • Reviewing technical deliverables from various internal and external organizations
  • Eliciting, managing, and validating equipment and interface requirements via extensive collaboration with cognizant engineers across multiple disciplines, the customer, subcontractors, and other stakeholders
  • Developing system architecture concepts, including evaluation of competing alternatives
  • Developing and maintaining system models in an MBSE environment
  • Maintaining a prototypical hardware and software development lab, required for the life of the boat
  • Writing technical manuals and procedures for operating and maintaining equipment
  • Supporting system operational testing, including procedure development, test execution, and evaluation of results
  • Providing remote and/or on-site (deckplate) support and troubleshooting for ship construction and test activities

How We Do It:
Our team members exemplify Electric Boat's core values:
  • Value each other
  • Behave with integrity and purpose
  • Commit to excellence

Each engineer on the team is cognizant of one or more areas of expertise and responsibility. A cognizant engineer at Electric Boat:
  • Ensures alignment with Electric Boat's purpose, vision, and values in all they do.
  • Maintains complete and total ownership of their assigned work (quality, schedule performance, and cost).
  • Understands that their signature signifies ownership and responsibility.
  • Speaks up and stops any work that is not being conducted in accordance with standards.
  • Develops the broad and deep knowledge needed for their role and understands how their work fits into the larger whole.
  • Keeps developing their skills, is aware of the limits of their knowledge, and seeks input from mentors and experts.
  • Commits to the success of their team, not just their personal success.
  • Maintains detailed, well-organized records of their work.
  • Identifies and implements improvement ideas as a routine part of their work.
  • Effectively communicates technical and programmatic information to their team, management, and stakeholders.
  • Continually assesses risk throughout a project and develops mitigation plans.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering
  • 0-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance through the Department of Defense

Preferred:
  • Experience in developing or maintaining industrial I&C systems
  • Defining and meeting functional and detail requirements
  • Experience planning and executing team projects
  • US Navy submarine service
  • Active DoD SECRET clearance

Skills
Candidates must demonstrate the following skills, which are necessary for success in this position:
  • Communicates well both verbally and in written format: effectively, thoroughly, logically, accurately, precisely, and concisely
  • Thrives in a team environment
  • Pays attention to the details
  • Manages assignments and workload effectively in order to consistently meet quality, schedule, and budget requirements
  • Prioritizes achieving desired outcomes (results) over activity (effort), and understands the criteria for successful completion of each task or assignment
  • Performs independently as well as interacts and collaborates with other groups and organizations in an engineering environment
  • Takes complete ownership of assigned areas of responsibility
  • Takes initiative to overcome obstacles
  • Troubleshoots/investigates to identify root causes, solve problems, and overcome challenges
