Fire Inspector I

What You Will Do
The Fire Inspector I plays an important role in ensuring fire and life safety in residential and commercial buildings throughout the Carroll County. We're seeking an individual with experience in fire and life safety codes who is ready to apply that knowledge to new construction and renovation projects in the County and its municipalities. In this position, you will make informed decisions as you analyze construction, interpret plans, and verify compliance with codes adopted by Carroll County and the State Fire Marshal's Office. Your day-to-day work will directly contribute to protecting lives and keeping our communities safe.
Essential Duties

• Review and interpret plans and apply current regulations of Carroll County Building Code Ordinance, International Building Code, International Residential Code, NFPA Life Safety and State Fire Prevention code
• Perform inspections, identify violations, evaluate corrective actions, and approve work in accordance with applicable codes and ordinances.
• Investigate complaints of illegal construction.
• Assist the State Fire Marshall's Office, as needed.
• Ensure all work is complete and timely to support department goals. Evaluate feedback and procedures to improve efficiency.
• Invite collaboration and seek learning opportunities. Proactively assist peers to create a supportive work environment.
• Exhibit integrity, ethics, and fiscal responsibility.

You Might Be a Good Fit If
Education and Experience

• High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
• Five or more years of related experience, including experience with fire and life safety code
• A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.

Required Licenses and Certifications

• Valid driver's license
• MFRI Fire Inspector I certification or ICC equivalent (or must obtain within 6 months of employment)

• Requires criminal background check as condition of employment.
• May be required to work outside of standard hours.

Working Conditions

• Frequent exposure to potentially adverse weather conditions.
• Occasional exposure to potentially adverse environmental conditions, including, but not limited to, chemicals, noise, and airborne particles.
• Frequent physical activity: standing/walking, pushing/pulling, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying, climbing steps, squatting, stooping, kneeling, and related activities.
• Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
