What does a coding tutor do?

A Coding Tutor helps students learn programming concepts, languages, and problem-solving skills. They provide personalized instruction, answer questions, and guide learners through coding exercises and projects. Coding Tutors may work with beginners or more advanced students, adapting their teaching style to each individual's needs. Their goal is to build students' confidence and competence in coding, whether for academic, professional, or personal development.

What does a coding tutor do?

As a coding tutor, you tutor people in computer programming by teaching them how to write codes. Your duties are to assist students in the creation and development of software and help them learn how to maintain and fix code in various formats. Depending on the student’s needs and your capabilities, you can help with anything from Java to C++. As a tutor, you generally help students taking college courses in coding. However, you might also help anyone seeking to educate themselves. Many working professionals want to learn to code so they can take on more responsibilities in their workplace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a coding tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Coding Tutor, you need strong programming knowledge in languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript, along with a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with online learning platforms, version control systems like Git, and code editors is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and the ability to break down complex concepts help students grasp new material and stay motivated. These skills ensure effective teaching, student engagement, and successful learning outcomes in a technical education environment.

How do coding tutors typically structure sessions to accommodate different learning styles and skill levels?

Coding Tutors often begin by assessing each student's current knowledge and preferred learning style, whether hands-on, visual, or theoretical. Sessions are then tailored with a mix of interactive coding exercises, step-by-step explanations, and real-world examples to ensure concepts are accessible and engaging. Tutors frequently incorporate collaborative problem-solving and provide regular feedback, adjusting the pace and focus as needed. This flexible approach helps students build confidence and progress at their own rate, making the learning experience both effective and enjoyable.

Job description

RWDI is a global climate and performance engineering consulting firm that helps its clients redefine what's possible by overcoming design and operational challenges, while minimizing environmental, user, and resource impact. With deep technical expertise across a broad range of services, we drive success on ambitious building, industry, and infrastructure projects.
We are a values-based organization, which means everything we do relates back to our three core values: innovation, integrity, and integration. So, when we look for new people to join our team, alignment to these values is a vital piece of our people puzzle. Here's what this looks like:
You push the boundaries of what's possible.
People know they can rely on you to follow through on your commitments.
You believe that when a group of people come together, they can achieve more than any one person could alone.

If this sounds like you and you're ready to join an award-winning organization and work alongside renown technical and exceptionally innovative colleagues, RWDI is the place for you.

In the role of Training & Development Leader you will partner with Human Resources, Leaders and Team members across all departments and regions to advance our training & development culture. You will help design, implement, and manage strategic programs that support RWDI's culture, vision, and values.
  • Develop and own a global learning & development (L&D) strategy for the organization.
  • Assess capability gaps and future skill needs (technical, leadership, role-specific) and translate into prioritized learning roadmaps.
  • Design, implement and scale blended learning solutions: instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, onthejob learning, mentorship, communities of practice, microlearning, and elearning platforms.
  • Build and manage signature programs in the areas of onboarding, mentorship and leadership development.
  • Partner closely with engineering leaders, Human Resources, and hiring to embed learning into talent processes (performance, succession).
  • Establish and manage measurement frameworks and KPIs (skill adoption, learning ROI, employee engagement/retention).
  • Own vendor selection and relationships (content platforms, external trainers) and manage L&D budget.
  • Lead a small global team that includes instructional design and training coordination.
  • Pilot innovative approaches (learning analytics, adaptive learning, AI-enabled tutoring) and scale successful experiments.
  • Communicate regularly to senior leadership on program progress, risks, and impact.

  • 8+ years L&D / Talent Development experience with increasing ownership; 3+ years leading global programs or teams, preferably within engineering or complex technical environments.
  • Demonstrated track record designing scalable, measurable learning programs and embedding them into talent processes.
  • Subject matter expertise in Change management methodologies.
  • Experience with learning technologies (LMS/LXP, authoring tools, virtual classroom platforms) and learning measurement frameworks.
  • Experience with a variety of different coaching tools and methodologies. Specific experience with Clifton Strengths is an asset.
  • BA/BS in Education, Organizational Development, or related field; advanced degree or relevant certification (CPLP, SHRM, L&D certifications) a plus.

  • An opportunity to redefine possible.
  • Salary range: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00
  • Group health benefits, RRSP, and Company bonus.
  • Proactive and ongoing training, education, and a Learning Spending Account.
  • Fitness Spending Account
Thank you in advance for your application. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
