Job description

Certified Medical Coder

Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute is looking to hire a Certified Medical Coder to join the JOI team. The position is full-time with benefits including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, and 401K retirement plan.

Location: 1325 San Marco Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32207

Schedule: Monday-Friday

The medical coder is responsible for translating details from a patient's medical documents into medical codes to ensure the patient's records are in an accurate application of diagnostic/procedure billing codes for orthopedic physician practice. JOI has 16 physicians and 7 mid-levels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilizes knowledge of medical codes and coding procedures to assign appropriate diagnostic/procedure billing codes, in compliance with third party payer requirements.
  • Interacts with physicians and other patient care providers regarding billing and documentation policies, procedures and regulations. Obtains clarification of conflicting, ambiguous, or non-specific documentation.
  • Enters charges and documents all activity in accordance with company documentation standards.
  • Reviews and audits provider billing and documentation records.
  • Educates providers and staff on proper coding procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA Privacy and Security Policies and Procedures.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

Position Requirements

  • 3+ years practical experience to include coding from medical charts.
  • CPC certification.
  • ICD-10 training/education.
  • Experience in physician CPT and ICD 10 coding.
  • Knowledge of healthcare billing and reimbursement, including industry standard billing rules.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
  • Must be well organized and detail-oriented.
  • Demonstrated problem solving techniques.
  • Computer proficient.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Requires sitting and standing associated with an office environment. Performs complex, occasionally challenging varied tasks requiring independent knowledge and exercise of independent judgment.
