Job Description Law Clerk - Estates Litigation Downtown Toronto Our client, a well known international law firm with offices in Toronto is in need of a Law Clerk to join its team. In this role the successful candidate will be responsible for providing support to the Estate Litigation department. RESPONSIBILITIES Works as a member of the team to evaluate the file to review case facts, determine appropriate processes, identify key issues and plan the steps necessary for the conduct of the file, ensuring critical deadlines are identified and met.

Drafts pleadings, applications, affidavits, correspondence and other documents as needed throughout the conduct of the file, in accordance with legislation and/or governing regulations. Liaises with clients to obtain information, ensure the client is current with the status of their file and to answer, within the assigned authority, any queries/concerns the client may have. Assists with all matters concerning estate administration, guardianships, will challenges and interpretations, power of attorney issues and disputes, passing of accounts, variations of trust and dependent relief applications.

Begins to undertake mentorship and guidance of junior staff within department. Researches and analyses various issues, processes, case law, codes, legislation, etc. Initiates follow up actions where and when necessary.

Communicates directly with service providers, judicial/tribunal officials and bank/financial institution officers in connection with the client's file. Prepares reports on an as needed basis. Any other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS Completion of accredited Law Clerk program. 5 - 8 years as a Law Clerk, with direct and practical experience working in estate litigation. Ability to communicate effectively with other members, with the aptitude to take care of clients' needs in a professional and courteous manner.

Ability to perform legal research, identify legal issues and analyze legal documents for accuracy. Developing aptitude to coach and mentor junior law clerks. Produce a high quality and quantity of work product, often under tight timelines.

Able to handle stress in a business-like manner and redefine priorities when necessary. Strong time management and organizational skills. Excellent understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure.

Self starter, able to work in a remote environment with limited supervision. Confident and dependable with strong initiative and the ability to work both independently and in a team oriented atmosphere. Exceptional technical skills, including experience in MS Office Suite, Expert Time, iManage and WindUp.

Working knowledge of Relativity or another document management software an asset. Basic understanding of other relevant areas of law including real estate, commercial law and tax an asset. Certificate in Estate and Trust Administration (CETA) an asset.
