Overview
We are hiring a Coding Quality Supervisor to join our team at UnityPoint Health! This role is responsible for supervising day-to-day coding quality operations, coaching and mentoring team members, and assigning tasks to ensure that the team's resources are used effectively. Additionally, the Supervisor will respond to more complex, escalated inquiries from team members and assist the Coding Quality Manager in administrative tasks as assigned.
Hours: Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm
Location: Remote - applicants must reside within the UnityPoint Health footprint of Iowa, Illinois, or Wisconsin

Responsibilities
Leadership:
  • Provide leadership to ensure effective, efficient office operations, optimizing performance and continually improving quality outcomes in a vastly changing health care environment
  • Oversee the day-to-day workflow of the office including reviewing team member needs and supervision and training of staff
  • Responsible for schedules and staffing of team members including monitoring timecards and timecard corrections
  • Establish effective mechanisms of communication with team members, UnityPoint Health affiliate personnel and insurance companies to foster an environment of openness, trust, teamwork and staff development
  • Demonstrate sound fiscal management of operation through the elimination of waste
  • Make recommendations for operational changes, staffing alignment changes, budgetary allowances, etc.
  • Assist with coordination and planning of monthly staff meetings
  • Assist in all aspects of hiring, interviewing and selecting staff
  • Monitor daily activity and productivity, recommending adjustments to staff responsibilities to meet department goals
  • Work with the manager and program manager to develop an effective training program for new staff and ongoing training for existing staff
  • Complete annual performance appraisals for direct reports

Performance Management of the Coding Quality Team:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for area assigned by leadership
  • Act as a go-to person for other departments and assist them with their questions and concerns
  • Provide appropriate training to providers and other departments for assigned area
  • Have basic knowledge of all tasks of the Coding Quality department and assist the staff when needed
  • Monitor reports and data to ensure assigned area is meeting department goals and key performance indicators
  • Assist with physician questions, suggestions and complaints
  • Actively participate in any assigned teams/meetings

Qualifications
Education:
  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Associates or Bachelor's degree in HIM or Coding

Experience:
  • Required: 5 + years progressive experience in coding, auditing and/or coding quality
  • Required: 1 year of project management
  • Preferred: Experience in measurement/analytics (data collection, analysis and interpretation) to support fact-based, predictive decision making
  • Preferred: Trained in ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding
  • Preferred: Experience in auditing and clinical chart reviews
  • Preferred: Supervisory/leadership experience

Licenses & Certifications:
  • Required (upon hire): Certified in one of the following: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist -Physician Based (CCS-P) Certified Professional Coder (COC/CPC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), or Certified Professional Coder - Hospital Outpatient (CPC-H)
  • Required (within 180 days of hire): Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) or Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP)
  • Preferred: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
